INDIANAPOLIS - Closing out a stretch of three matches in five days, the Marian women's soccer team dominated the pitch Monday afternoon in their home opener, defeating Ottawa Arizona (OUAZ) 5-0 at Ascension St. Vincent Field. The Knights dominated the shot totals in the match, moving to 3-0-0 on the season.
OUAZ gave Marian an early five minute test, attempting to match energy levels as they pressed into the Knights' defensive half of the pitch. Marian took over possession in a big way, getting a pair of shots in an immediate response to take control of the flow in the game. A flurry of corner kicks and shots kept the offense on the hunt, and in the 17th minute
Marian Corro Celma buried a free kick from 30 yards out, netting the team's first goal. Corro Celma's goal came after a foul against the Spirit, and four minutes later, another foul against OUAZ led to Marian's offense getting another free opportunity.
In the 21st minute,
Olivia Parmer took a hard tackle as she drove into the box, drawing a foul and stoppage for a penalty kick.
Katie Koger took the penalty, and instinctively buried the shot in the right corner of the goal, expanding the lead to 2-0. Marian kept their foot on the pedal and ended the first half on a high-note, adding a goal in the 40th minute by Koger, who scored off a redirect of
Sammie King's shot. The three-goal period sealed a 3-0 half, with the Knights just missing out on a chance to add to the lead as two shots on goal in a 10 second window in the 43rd minute were denied by the keeper Jordan Gentile.
The second half continued to show Marian as the dominant and aggressive side, even with the Knights rotating deep into their bench. The team earned two shot attempts in the first five minutes of the period, while another four shots were fired on target in the next 10 minutes. At the top of the 61st minute,
Kaitlyn Lavezzi netted her first goal of the season, burying a pass from
Olivia Parmer into the net to expand the lead to four goals. Marian's aggressive attack would only see one counter from Ottawa, with their lone shot of the game being denied by
Mycheala Johnson in goal.Â
Allie Tredway would finish the scoring in the one-sided win, netting her second collegiate goal in the 79th minute to complete the 5-0 victory.
Marian held a 27-1 advantage in shot attempts in the win, while taking 11 corner kicks to the Spirit's one.
Olivia Parmer tied Tredway for a team-best five shot attempts, while Koger and King each had four shots. Koger scored two goals on her three attempts on target, with her brace leading the team in scoring. Parmer collected two assists in the win, while King recorded one assist as well. Corro Celma and Lavezzi's goals were their first of the season.Â
The Knights return to action on Friday afternoon, traveling to the greater Nashville, Tennessee, area to play Bethel (TN).Â
