Moles' Buzzer-Beater Attempt Falls Short as Knights Fall to No. 3 Bethel

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. - The Marian men's basketball fell 81-80 to No. 3 Bethel Saturday afternoon. The Knights moved to 4-16 overall on the year and 2-8 in the Crossroads League after the loss. 

Each team opened up the game with a basket, with Aaron Humphrey Jr. recording the points for the Knights. The Pilots fired off a pair of baskets to take the early 6-2 lead. Both teams maintained a close scoring game in the beginning minutes, with Dylan Moles, Josiah Gustin, and Humphrey Jr. all recording baskets in the opening minutes, but Bethel maintained their two-point lead. Bethel extended their lead with a pair of baskets before Marian pushed back with a trio of baskets to bring the lead down to 16-13. Both sides continued to attack with Bethel recording three baskets compared to the pair from Elhadj Diallo, bringing the score 23-18.

Bethel extended their push with four baskets, but Gustin was able to break up the run with a jumper. Joshua Renfro fired off a pair of free throws, but the Pilots were able to counter with a three-pointer before Marian fired off two more baskets from Renfro and Humphrey Jr., bringing the score 30-26. Each team went back-and-forth three more times, with Moles firing off all three shots, bringing the margin within three. The Pilots recorded one more basket in the half, but Humphrey Jr. was able to close out with a jumper to bring the score 37-34. 

The Knights opened up the second half, taking their first lead of the game with Gustin and Aidan Franks each recording a basket. Each side recorded a pair of baskets with Ron Rutland III and Gustin recording the baskets for Marian, tying the game 43-43. The Pilots regained control, firing off a pair of baskets, but Franks was quick to decrease the blow with a basket. Each team continued to go back-and-forth before Marian took charge once again, going on a 40 run with Frank's, Rutland III, and Moles all recording baskets to tie the game up 60-60. 

Both teams continued to go back and forth, yet again tying the game 62 a piece, before Marian took the 72-70 lead with Gustin, Renfro, Humphrey Jr., and Moles all recording key points. Bethel came back and took the three-point lead once more before they traded baskets, bringing the game to 77-74 with three minutes remaining. Humphrey Jr. and Gustin went back-to-back with baskets to allow Marian to take the one-point lead. The Pilots fired off a layup, but Moles countered, taking the lead back with 40 seconds remaining. Bethel broke the upset with a layup, ending the game with an 81-80 win over Marian. 

Aaron Humphrey Jr. led the way with points with 18, while Dylan Moles was close behind with 17. Josiah Gustin led the way in rebounds with 13 while also recording a double-double with 14 points. Humphrey Jr. also recorded a double-double, tabbing 11 rebounds. Moles led the way with 4 assists. 

Marian will be back in action as they travel to Spring Arbor on Wednesday, January 28th, at 7:00 PM.
