Marian Falls to No. 1 Grace Lancers

INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian men's basketball team fell to No. 1 Grace on Wednesday evening. The Knights moved to 2-4 in the Crossroads League and 4-12 overall on the year. 

Grace struck first with a three-pointer, but Marian was quick to take charge with four baskets from Luke Carroll, Aidan Franks, and Aaron Humphrey Jr. to take the 8-3 lead. The Lancers pushed at the lead, but the Knights continued to counter with Humphrey Jr. and Franks maintaining the lead into the 12-minute mark. Grace was able to take the 16-14 lead, but Humphrey Jr. and Ron Rutland III were able to take the lead back with a pair of baskets. The Lancers fired off a pair of baskets, but Dylan Moles was able to fire off a three-pointer to draw the 21-21 tie with a little under nine minutes remaining in the half. 

Each team fired off a basket with Joshua Renfro recording the points for the Knights before Grace went on a six-basket run to increase their lead 31-23. Franks ended the run with a three-pointer to decrease the margin to five. The Lancers took charge, firing off five baskets to increase their lead to 16. Rutland III broke up the run with a layup, but Grace went on another four-basket run to end the quarter 49-28. 

Each team opened up the second half trading baskets with Franks firing off a dunk followed by a pair of free throws. The Lancers continued to extend their lead with a pair of baskets to extend their lead to 59-36. Each team traded multiple baskets with Humphrey Jr. firing off a trio. Grace went on another three-basket run to increase the lead, but Renfro was able to benefit from a foul followed by a jumper from Carroll to bring the score 68-42.

The visitors fired off a free throw, but Marian was able to counter with a pair of baskets from Renfro and Humphrey Jr. Grace continued to strike with a trio of baskets, but Rutland III broke up the run with a layup, extending the lead to 75-50. In the final minutes, Grace outshot Marian nine baskets to six, ending the game 91-62.

Aaron Humphrey Jr. led the way with 16 points while Aidan Franks fired off 15 points and five rebounds. Ron Rutland III was also in the double digits with 12 points and seven rebounds. Luke Carroll led the way with eight rebounds, while he and Rutland III led with two assists each.

The Knights will be back in action as they continue their home stretch, as they host the University of Saint Francis (Ind.) at 3:00 PM in the P.E. Center.
