LEBANON, Ind. - The Marian men's tennis team bounced back into the win column on Monday afternoon, taking down No. 19 Cumberland University at the Farmer's Bank Fieldhouse by a 4-0 final score. The Knights move to 2-2 overall on the season with their upset win.
The Knights got their afternoon win started by taking the doubles point, winning on the first and third courts.
James Ashworth and
Mateo Guerin picked up a 6-1 win at No. 1 singles, but the Knights would fall at No. 2 singles as
Jan Bartolome and
Marcos Ramos Cabrera dropped their match 6-4. Leaving the point hanging in the balance at No. 3 doubles, Marian was able to win the match and seal the first point, getting a win from
Marc Soriano and
Iyan Cresens, as the duo won 7-5.
Marian would then roll through singles, taking three matches to clinch the victory.
James Ashworth was victorious at No. 1 singles by a commanding 6-0, 6-1 score, and at No. 3 singles,
Marc Soriano won 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (3).
Mateo Guerin clinched the match, winning 3-6, 6-0, 1-0 (7) at No. 2 singles, giving the Knights a 4-0 win.
Marcos Ramos Cabrera went unfinished in his match at No. 4 singles, trailing 6-7, 1-0, and at No. 5 Bogdan Precupsescu trailed 2-3 as he began his outing. Juan Garica-Tunon did not start his match at No. 6 singles.Â
Marian ends the week with home matches on indoor courts against No. 13 Oakland City on Friday night and on Sunday afternoon against the University of Saint Francis. Friday night's match will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Farmer's Bank Fieldhouse.
