INDIANAPOLIS - For the second time on the week, the Marian men's tennis has landed a top-25 NAIA upset win, as the Knights defeated No. 13 Oakland City late in the night on Friday, February 20. Marian's win improves their overall record on the season to 3-2.
Marian fell behind early in the match, as they were unable to win the doubles point, losing two of the three matches.
James Ashworth and
Mateo Guerin picked up the only win, taking a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles.
Jan Bartolome and
Marcos Ramos Cabrera came close to a doubles win at No. 2, but fell by a 7-6 (2) match that decided the point to the Mighty Oaks.Â
In singles, Marian worked quick to recover the point, winning at No. 3 singles as
Marc Soriano defeated Louki Nivarlet 6-2, 6-1, leveling the score 1-1.
James Ashworth followed with a 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (3) win at No. 1 singles to give Marian a lead in the match, but the contest would come to a draw as
Mateo Guerin fell in three sets at No. 2 singles.
Tied 2-2, Marian was able to get the go-ahead match point at No. 4 singles, as
Marcos Ramos Cabrera landed a 7-5, 6-4 win, giving Marian a 3-2 match lead. With the match hinging on the No. 5 and No. 6 courts, the Knights were able to get the match-sealing win from
Bogdan Precupescu. Precupsecu won against Luis Cordoba 6-1, 7-5 at No. 5 singles, clinching Marian's win by a 4-2 count.
Juan Garcia-Tunon went unfinished at his match, trailing 6-1, 5-5.Â
Marian will end its busy week at home on Sunday afternoon, hosting the University of Saint Francis on the team's senior day. The match begins at 1:30 p.m., and senior festivities start at 12:45 p.m. The match will be played at the Indy Healthplex.
