INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian men's basketball season concluded on Saturday afternoon, as the Knights fell to Huntington in their season finale 82-67. Marian ends the season with a 5-23 record, going 2-16 against the Crossroads League.
Marian battled with Huntington early on Saturday afternoon, but were unable to contain a sharp-shooting Foresters squad.
Aaron Humphrey Jr. and
Aidan Franks got Marian's offense rolling early on, but the likes of Jackson Paul and Miles Good overcame their efforts, as the Foresters engaged the Knights in the high-scoring half. With 10:21 remaining in the first half, Huntington took a 19-18 lead on Marian, but the Knights remained in the fight, getting an eight-point first half from
Joshua Renfro.
Aaron Humphrey Jr. tied the game at 26 with 7:17 to play in the first half, but it would be the last time Marian led or tied, as a Matthew Spears three-pointer ignited the Foresters on a 10-0 run, pulling the road team on top 36-26.
Ron Rutland III and
Blake Russell would get Marian back within single digits on the board with offensive contributions, but it would not be enough to ignite a spark, as Huntington kept control of the game. The Foresters' Landon Biegel capped the visiting scoring in the half, as Huntington led 47-33 over the Knights at intermission.
The Knights would come out of the locker room strong to open the second half as
Dylan Moles and
Aaron Humphrey Jr. scored early on, but the Foresters quickly ramped up the scoring, pushing the lead to 20 points within the second half's first three minutes.
The lead for Huntington stayed at 13 or more for the remainder of the game, as Marian could not cut the score to single digits in the final 17 minutes of play, resulting in the team's 82-67 home defeat.
Before the final horn, Marian senior
Hayden Nahra checked in on his senior day, logging his first minutes of the season after missing time due to a preseason injury. Nahra finished the game with a block and fast break layup in the final minute of the game, logging his first points in his final day in a Knights uniform.
Marian was led in scoring by
Aaron Humphrey Jr., who scored 19 points while grabbing eight rebounds.
Ron Rutland III scored 12 in the loss, and
Joshua Renfro scored 11 off the bench.
The Knights ended the season on a 14-game losing streak, matching the longest streak in program history. The season also finished with five wins, the fewest recorded in a year since the 2007-08 season.
Marian aims to announce the hiring of its new head coach for the program in the coming weeks.
