Williamsburg, Ky. - The Marian women's lacrosse team dropped its first game of the season on Saturday afternoon, as the Knights fell at second-ranked Cumberlands by a final of 19-4. Marian sits at 1-1 overall on the season following the loss.
The Patriots got the upper hand on Marian early Saturday, scoring three goals in the first five minutes of the game. Marian locked in on defense and was able to shut down the Cumberlands' attack, tightening up on defense to hold the home team scoreless over the final 10 minutes of the quarter.Â
Cumberlands got their offense rolling again in the second quarter, quickly scoring 36 seconds into the quarter to take a 4-0 lead.
Ruby Mason ended the early game drought for the Knights, but a pair of Patriots goals kept the second-ranked NAIA team on top. Mason and
Ella Grace Giedd would score before halftime, sending the game to intermission with Marian trailing 8-3.Â
After halftime, Marian was able to score the first goal of the second half as
Esbeydi Montes slipped a shot past the keeper, however, it would be Marian's last goal of the game, as Cumberlands scored 11 unanswered goals to close the game, running away with the 19-4 victory.
Ruby Mason scored both of Marian's goals and won all three of the team's draw controls.
Ella Grace Giedd fired four shots and scored one goal in the loss. Goalie
Aniyah Jones recovered a team-high nine ground balls and made eight saves in the loss.
Marian will return home on Thursday, March 5, hosting No. 7 Missouri Baptist at 5:00 p.m.
