INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian women's lacrosse team dropped its second top-10 matchup of the season on Thursday night, as the Knights fell at home to No. 1 Benedictine 19-3. Marian drops to 2-2 overall on the season.
Marian would strike first in the game's opening 91 seconds, as
Ruby Mason was able to slam home the first goal after
Ella Grace Giedd found her fellow senior. Benedictine answered the goal with three unanswered scores, but the streak was stopped as Giedd scored Marian's second goal with 2:50 remaining in the first quarter.Â
The goal from Giedd would be the last highlight play in the first half, as Benedictine flexed its top-ranking as the defending NAIA champions rattled off nine unanswered goals, scoring two before the end of the first quarter and six in the second quarter, taking a one-sided 11-2 lead into halftime.Â
Benedictine scored the first goal in the second half to cap it's 9-0 run, as Kiera Russell made the contest a 12-2 game. Marian would stop the run with a goal from
Allyson Cissell, but the goal with 9:46 to play in period three would not be enough to stop the Ravens, as Benedictine scored back-to-back goals to end the third quarter.
The Ravens led 14-3 after three quarters of play, and scored five unanswered goals in the fourth quarter, closing out a 19-3 win.Â
Mason and Giedd each took four shots in the loss, scoring one goal each.
Delaney Koles had an assist and took four shots for Marian. In goal,
Aniyah Jones recovered a team-high seven ground balls, and made nine saves in the loss.
Alex Dean won a team-high five draw controls.Â
The Knights will stay at home for their next contest, opening WHAC play on Saturday afternoon when they host Aquinas at 1:00 p.m.
