Knights Split With Wildcats To Open Week

Indianapolis, Ind. - The Marian softball team split with Indiana Wesleyan on Tuesday afternoon. After the split, the Knights moved to 18-3 on the year and 10-2 in the crossroads league.

Game 1 | Marian 3-2 Indiana Wesleyan | 8 Innings
After three quick endings on both sides, Indiana Wesleyan was able to strike first with a single down the right field line to score the runner. Lily Wendt was quick to retaliate, reaching on a fielder's choice to score Mati Hughes, tying the game up 1-1.

After four more dry innings, the Wildcats were able to strike again in the top of the eighth with a solo home run into left center, taking the lead once again. In the bottom of the eighth, Abby Madere hit an RBI single into right center to score Abbey Hofmann and tie the game up once more. In the next step, Hughes hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Ella Piercy, who pinch ran for Madere. Ally Malone was next up to the plate, hitting a walk-off single into left center and scoring Piercy. 

Ally Malone and Abbey Hofmann led the way, going 3-4 from the plate with Malone tallying one RBI. Macy Coan took the win, pitching all eight innings, giving up nine hits, and recording 7 strikeouts.

Game 2 | Marian 1-9 Indiana Wesleyan | 5 Innings
Indiana Wesleyan started game two out strong, getting out to a 2-0 lead going into the fourth inning. The Wildcats continued to strike big in the fourth inning, getting up by six runs. The Knights fought back with two runners on base in the bottom of the fourth, with Mati Hughes and Haley Webb getting on base, but did not reach home due to Indiana Wesleyan's defense. 

In the top of the fifth, the Wildcats benefited from an error in the field followed by a single into center field to increase their lead 9-0. Abby Madere reached on an error by the shortstop to score Abbey Hofmann and decrease the margin to eight. Hughes ended the game flying out to left field, splitting the day with the Wildcats. 

Abbey Hofmann, Ally Malone, and Mystic Means all tallied the soul hits of the game. Alayna Tesnar took the start, pitching for 3.1 innings. Lexi Smith came in as relief pitching for 1.2 innings in the game. 

Marian will be back in action on Wednesday, March 25th as they host Spring Arbor University, with game one set for a 3 PM start time at the MU Softball Diamond.
