Jen Burton Named Crossroads League Athletic Trainer of the Year

JACKSON, Mich. - The Crossroads League announced on Monday, July 13, that Jen Burton of Marian University has been named its 2025-26 Athletic Trainer of the Year. The award is in its fourth year of existence in the Crossroads League, and Burton is the first recipient in Marian history.

"I am truly humbled and incredibly honored to be named the Crossroads League Athletic Trainer of the Year," said Burton on the honor. "To be recognized by a league filled with so many outstanding athletic trainers is something I will never take for granted. This honor is not mine alone, as it truly takes a village! It reflects the trust that our student-athletes place in me, the support of our coaches and administration, and the dedication of my incredible sports medicine colleagues who challenge and inspire me every day. I am especially grateful to my husband, Brian, and two kids for their constant encouragement and understanding.

"Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this journey. It is a privilege to serve the Marian University and Crossroads League community, and I look forward to continuing to provide the care our athletes can count on for years to come."

Burton finished her first year as Marian's Head Athletic Trainer this past school year and had a full year leading up to her award. Marian's athletic training room grew to five full-time members with Burton onboarding two new hires in the past year, while also working hand in hand with John Locke in his new role as Sports Medicine Coordinator. Burton also orchestrated the purchase of the Perry Weather system and initiated nutritional appointments for Marian student-athletes, continuing to find ways to improve the well-being of all Knights.

Burton is the longest-tenured athletic trainer at Marian, having served the university for over a decade since joining in 2008. She earned an associate's from Elgin Community College before going to Grand Valley State, where she earned her bachelor's degree. She later earned her master's degree in athletic training from Ball State.

"I am extremely proud and happy for Jennifer to be named as the Crossroads League Athletic Trainer of the Year," said Director of Athletics Steve Downing. "She is an extremely hard worker and does a great job working with our coaches and student-athletes. She has taken the reins as head AT very well this year, and I appreciate all she does to improve our student-athletes' well-being from both a recovery and prevention standpoint."

The Crossroads League Athletic Trainer-of-the-Year award was voted on by Athletic Trainers from the Crossroads League.

Later this week, the Crossroads League will announce its Male and Female Athletes of the Week, honors that feature Marian Knights.
