Leonard Assouan's Brace Leads Marian In Saturday Night Win

INDIANAPOLIS - Marian men's soccer opened their six-game home stand with a dominant 5-1 win Saturday evening. Leonard Assouan led the charge with a pair of goals. After the win, the Knights moved to 3-1 overall on the season.

Marian took control early with a trio of shots in the first 3 minutes of play. Samuel Wehaus hit the back of the net first for the Knights to capture his fourth goal of the season. Wehaus and Rafael Zambrano struck back-to-back but came up short. Leonard Assouan was quick to follow up with his first goal of the evening, less than a minute after Wehaus' goal, to extend the lead to 2-0. Wehaus and Zambrano struck once more back-to-back before IU-Columbus took advantage of a Penalty Kick to bring down Marian's lead to one. After one more shot for the Knights, Assouan struck again, extending the lead back to two at the 21-minute mark. Marian continued to maintain the lead with a trio of goals before Lazar Milosavljevic and Joao Antonio Rocha recorded back-to-back goals to extend the lead to four with seven minutes remaining in the half. IU-Columbus took three chances while the Knights took four before the half was up, but both came up just shy, ending the first half with a 5-1 lead for Marian.

Marian continued to bring the fire with four shots to open up the half. Zambrano recorded three of the four with two on target that came up just shy against Jordin Jones' defense in goal. The Crimson Pride attempted a strike at the 58th minute but came up short against Talon Collier's defense in goal. Marian tabbed three more shots, with two saved by IU-Columbus' goalie before the Crimson Pride was able to record a pair of their own. The second half continued to be a defensive battle in goal and on the defensive line, with the Knights recording one shot that was blocked and IU-Columbus recording a header shot that was saved by Collier to end the match with the 5-1 win for the Knights.

Leonard Assouan led the Knights with five shots and four on target, as well as two goals. Samuel Wehaus also had a multi-shot evening with four and one goal. Rafael led Marian in shots with six and four on target. Dani Rojas, Taha Souiri, Josh Wesseling, and Lazar Milosavljevic each recorded one assist in the matchup as well. In goal, Tristan Edwards gained the start and recorded a pair of saves. Talon Collier came in as relief, playing the second half and making his first collegiate pair of saves.

Marian moves to 3-1 overall on the season and will be back in action on Wednesday, September 2nd, taking on Saint Xavier at 7 PM at Ascension St. Vincent Field.
