BIO

  • As offensive coordinator for the Knights, Andy Mitchel has brought a new style and attitude to the MU offense. 
  • In 2021, Mitchel's offense leaned on the run with Daylen Taylor and Baron Huebler heading a charge that gave them a top-15 rushing attack in the NAIA.
  • Under Mitchel in 2021, the Knights' Johnny William finished off his historic career, earning NAIA First Team All-American and MSFA Player of the Year honors. William finished his career as Marian's all-time leader in receiving yards and touchdowns. 
  • In 2020-21, Mitchel helped lead Marian's offense to top-10 NAIA rankings in passing efficiency and passing offense per game, while guiding the offense of a team that ranked No. 15 in scoring offense per game. 
  • In 2020-21, Mitchel helped Johnny William become one of the all-time great players in Marian history as William broke the career receiving touchdowns record at Marian, passing Krishawn Hogan.
  • In 2019, Mitchel again led Marian's offense to a top-10 season across multiple categories, including ranking second in the NAIA in sacks against, seventh in total rushing offense, and seventh in scoring, while ranking 10th in rushing per game and 11th in third down conversions. 
  • Under Mitchel's leadership in 2019, Charles Salary was named the NAIA Player of the Year, becoming the first Marian player to ever win the award. Salary finished his career No. 2 all time in rushing yards, attempts, and touchdowns, while ranking first in rushing yards per game. 
  • In 2018, Mitchel guided Marian's offense to one of its best seasons in program history. The Knights ranked second in the country in sacks against, second in pass efficiency, fourth in third down conversions, sixth in total offense per game and 15th in rushing offense per game.
  • Tight end Brandon Dillon graduated as a the most feared tight end in program history, and has latched on in the NFL playing for the Minnesota Vikings, while also joining the New Orleans Saints and the New York Jets. 
  • In his first season, Mitchel helped lead the Knights to the program's third MSFA Mideast League championship, its fourth appearance in the NAIA Football Championship Series and its second appearance in the NAIA Football National Championship game. He helped lead the Knights to an 11-3 record and a 5-1 mark in MSFA MEL play.?
  • During his second season in 2015, Mitchell helped the Knights to the program's second national championship behind an offense that posted nearly 42 points per game. 
  • The 2014 season saw the Knights bring new elements to the offense and utilize running back Tevin Lake to the fullest extent. The 2014 season not only brought a national runner-up finish, but was the most prolific in terms of passing yards in program history. While 2014 was the third-highest total rushing yards, the passing offense saw new single-season highs in completions, attempts and yards.
  • Mitchel helped guide Lake to fifth all-time in NAIA history in rushing yards and fifth in total scoring in NAIA history. Last season, he guided a rushing offense that ran for 1,974 yards and 28 touchdowns, which was second in program history.
  • Mitchel's offense finished in the top 25 in the nation in nine categories. MU was fourth in total pass offense and seventh in total scoring in 2014. The Knights also ranked 12th in total pass offense per game, 17th in scoring offense per game, 18th in third-down conversions and 24th in total offense per game, just to include a few.
  • He guided wide receiver Krishawn Hogan to the second 1,000-yard receiving season in program history in 2014. Hogan caught a single-season school record 82 passes for a single-season record 1,136 yards and caught a single-season record 11 touchdown passes. MU had the fourth-most prolific season in completion percentage (57.1) in 2014 and had 279 completions, which is the second-highest number in program history. Hogan has spent time with the Indianapolis Colts, Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints, and Arizona Cardinals in five NFL seasons, and most recently spent a brief spell with the Montreal Alouettes in the CFL. 
  • Mitchel has coached two MSFA Mideast League Offensive Players of the Year in Tevin Lake (2014) and the Krishawn Hogan (2016). Mitchel also had offensive linemen Zach Mitchell and Darrion McAlister named an AFCA-NAIA All-America First Team selection.
  • Prior to Marian University, Mitchel spent eight seasons at perennial NCAA Division III contender Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. During his time at Witt, he helped guide the Tigers to five North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) championships and five NCAA Division III playoff appearances. The team was 67-11 during his time and averaged 38 points per game from 2009-13. On five occasions, his offense led the NCAC in total offense and it also led the league in scoring offense on four occasions.
  • Prior to Witt, Mitchel was the offensive coordinator at Simpson College from 2003-05 and served as video and recruiting coordinator. He helped guide the Storm to an NCAA Division III playoff appearance in 2003 and had the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's (IIAC) top passing offense in 2003 and 2004 as well as the top offense in 2003.
  • His first coaching stint was with the University of Wisconsin-Platteville where he served as the passing game coordinator and assistant strength and conditioning coach from 2000-03. For three straight seasons, Mitchel guided the top passing offense (2000-02) and total offense in 2001 and 2002.
  • Mitchel earned his bachelor's degree from Wisconsin-Platteville in 2000. He has also been published in numerous publications concerning the passing offense and has given numerous clinic presentations during his career.
  • His playing experience was at Hanover College from 1996-99 and he was part of the two-time undefeated Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) champions in 1997 and 1998. He was a three-time all-conference wide receiver who also earned all-america honorable mention honors in 1999.
  • A Portland, Ind., native, Mitchel graduated from Jay County High School and currently resides in Indianapolis with his wife and two children.
