In her first year at Marian University, Melissa Coutz serves as the assistant coach for the softball team.
 
As a third basemen for the Marian University softball team from 2006-10, Coutz helped lead the team to a Mid-Central College Conference tournament championship in 2009 and an MCC regular season championship in 2010. As a freshman, Coutz earned All-Region honors, started 32 of 36 games and finished with a batting average of .276. She posted 24 hits including four doubles, three triples, and a team-high four homeruns. During her sophomore season, she started 43 games for the Knights and had a batting average of .313. Coutz also drove in 20 runs for MU and had a slugging percentage of .529. In 2009 Coutz and the Knights earned the MCC tournament title. She played in 45 games and had 38 hits and 23 RBI. She also hit three homeruns and was named to the All-Tournament team. In her final season with the Knights, Coutz started all 48 games for the Knights at third and helped lead them to a perfect 16-0 record in MCC play. She was third on the team with a .384 batting average and third in homeruns with six. Coutz was also second on the team in both RBI (46) and slugging percentage (.601). She earned All-MCC honors, was a Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete, and was named MCC Academic All-Conference. She was also awarded the Cooling Service and Elemendorf scholarships, served as the Student Athletic Advisory Board representative for softball, and was a member of Marian University's Business Creation and Development Consulting Group during her time at Marian.
 
Coutz also served as the marketing intern for Westminster Village North Retirement Community and Fastenal in Indianapolis. She was also the finance intern for RiverWood Financial Group.
 
Coutz will graduate from Marian University in the spring of 2011 with a bachelor of science in Marketing, Accounting, and Finance. She currently resides in Indianapolis, Ind.
