INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian men's rugby team earned their first win in program history on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Southern Indiana University Rugby Club 60-5. The Knights are now 1-1 overall on the season following the program's first win.
Marian scored the first 12 points of the match, opening the scoing with an Alessandro Mares try, the first in program history. Ben Kompar followed the scoring with a successful try, allowing the Knights to take a 12-0 lead. Southern Indiana scored next, but Marian responded with three unanswered tries, with Isaiah Ariza-Escala scoring two of the three. Following Jacob Carroll's try, Marian took a 31-5 lead at halftime.
The Knights continued to be the aggressor in the second half, scoring 29 points in the second half to cap their 60-point outing. Tom Rotherham, Solomon Martin, Elijah Prospero, and Nigel Evans all scored successful tries in the second half, with Prospero scoring twice. Max Hendry finished the day 5-10 on conversions.
Marian will next play on March 27 at Marshall University.
