Big Plays and Takeaways Highlight Marian's 67-7 Homecoming Rout of Taylor

Box Score

INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian football team made it look easy at times in Saturday's homecoming win, as the Knights ran wild over Taylor in a 67-7 landslide victory. The Knights winning streak extends to 13 straight games over Taylor, as Marian improved to 4-0 on the year with the win.

Marian wasted little time putting points on the board Saturday, finding their stride mid-way through an eight-play series as Zach Bundalo connected with Jacob Pressler for a gain of 19. A 30-yard gain from Ben Stevens moved the offense into the red zone, and four plays later Jake Reichard plowed in from six yards out of the Wildcat to give Marian a 6-0 lead. The defense got the ball back for the offense after forcing the Trojans to punt, and Marian returned the favor with a 12-play drive that ended in a 15-yard touchdown pass from Bundalo to Christian Hunter

The 13-0 lead soon grew as a pair of Deon Pettiford tackles helped get the ball back for the Knights, and Marian went to work closing the first quarter with a Bundalo pass to Reichard. The Knights continued to march down the field with Baron Huebler churning yards on the ground, with the drive ending in points as Reichard scored his second touchdown to make it a 20-0 score. Taylor would respond on their next series with a one-play drive, as Elijah McCloskey caught the second napping, and connected with Dakohta Sonnichsen for an 80-yard passing touchdown.

The Knights methodically answered the one-play drive, and ate up nearly six minutes off the clock as Bundalo connected with Reichard and Drew Bylery, while Hunter surged ahead on the ground. The transfer running back capped off the 11-play drive with a one-yard touchdown run, giving Marian a 26-7 lead after the PAT was blocked. Taylor aimed to double their total after getting the ball back, driving deep into Marian territory as the first half wound down. On the 13th play of the series, the defense made their stand as Logan Blake jumped a McCloskey pass, and raced 88-yards to the end zone for his third career pick-six.

Blake's interception return gave Marian a 33-7 lead going into half, with Clay Campbell intercepting a hail mary on the half's final play.

In the third quarter the Knights put the game to rest, getting the ball back quick after the defense forced a turnover on downs. A long run from Huebler pushed Marian into Taylor territory, and on the ensuing play CJ Young hauled in a 41-yard pass from Bundalo for his first score of the season. The Knights got the quickly as Tyler Majors scooped up a bobbled snap and raced 20-yards to the Taylor five, setting up a quick score for Huebler.

Marian would recover another fumble on the ensuing drive as Chauncey Mays picked up a ball forced out by Peyton Trexler, but a missed field goal had the drive come up empty. Pettiford would get Marian back in business with a sack, and after a Tirae Spence reception put Marian in the red zone, William Gibson plowed in for a one-yard score to give the Knights a 54-7 lead with under four minutes remaining in the quarter.

Gibson again put up points to start the fourth quarter with his second score of the game, and after a shanked punt Keagan La Belle put the finishing points on the board, as he raced for a 34-yard touchdown to put cap the scoring at 67. Marian's defense would make the final stand as Ricky Kwak and Noah Earl-Jackson helped the surge on a goal line stand, allowing the offense to run out the final 5:57 and complete the 67-7 victory.

Marian racked up over 500 yards of offense for the third time this season, ending the game with 535 total yards. Bundalo threw for 252 and a pair of scores, while the Knights combined for 261 yards on the ground. La Belle led all ball carriers with 70 yards rushing, while Gibson and Huebler each had 61. Young led the receivers with 54 yards, and Reichard had 57 total on the ground and through the air. Jake Paris led the Knights defense with nine total tackles and Kwak had seven, while Pettiford had the lone sack on the afternoon for Marian.

Blake's second quarter pick-six moved him to third-all time in interception return yards, and first in career interception return touchdowns.

The Knights will finish a two-game home stand in Indianapolis next Saturday night, as Marian hosts No. 9 Indiana Wesleyan at 6:05 p.m. The game is a white out, and Marian will be honoring their football alumni with a special 15-years of Knights football celebration.
