INDIANAPOLIS – Goals came early and often for the Marian women's soccer team in their 6-0 win over Goshen on Saturday at St. Vincent Field. With the win, the Knights improve to 13-0-2 overall and 6-0-1 in Crossroads League play.
Goshen played keep away in the opening minutes, but that did not stop Marian from finding their shots early as Naomi Walters put one past the Goshen goalie on the assist from Erin Oleksak in the fifth minute to get the Knights started.
It was only a little under four minutes later when the Knights found their second goal behind the efforts of Allie Schlom, who later would beat the Maple Leafs defenders five minutes later to give Marian the 3-0 lead and her second goal.
Marian continued to fire off shots, while Goshen could not come up with any sort of offense in the first half as they went shotless. Walters, Gretchen Mallin, and Delaney Taylor all took shot attempts, all being saved by the Goshen keeper. The aggressive offense continued to pay off for the hosts as Oleksak found the back of the net on the assist from Taylor to increase their lead to 4-0. However, Oleksak was not done for the half. With a little over 30 seconds left in the first half, the senior beat the Goshen defenders to boot one past the keeper to give Marian the 5-0 lead at the half.
After the break, the Knights continued their offensive tear, scoring early in the 47th minute behind Schlom's goal on the assist from Maya Decker to give Marian their sixth goal and complete the hat trick for the senior.
The hosts fired off eight shots in the second half to Goshen's two. After Schlom's goal, Walters, Jacelyn Smith, Stephanie Ramos, and Oleksak all piled together chances at goal, but were unable to come up with anything as the Goshen keeper made impressive saves. The Knights managed to keep the Maple Leafs scoreless even with two late attempts at goal, as they would go on to win 6-0.
Marian put together a great team effort in the win with Schlom leading the charge with her hat trick, while Oleksak added two goals to go along with one assist. Walters had the first goal of the match for her lone goal of the day. Smith and Decker each took two shot attempts, while Taylor, Mallin, Lindsey Stoughton, and Ramos all took one.
Noelle Rolfsen and Mycheala Johnson put together a solid performance in goal for the Knights, with Johnson picking up the lone save in the game.
Marian will return to action Wednesday, October 26, as they make the trip to Taylor for a 7 PM start.
