Upland, Ind. – The Marian women's soccer team had no problem taking care of Taylor on Wednesday night as they downed the Trojans 6-1. The win kicks off one of two final regular season games this week, and the Knights now improve to 7-0-1 in league play and 14-0-2 overall. With the win over Taylor and a loss by Indiana Wesleyan, Marian claims a share of the Crossroads League Regular Season Championship.
The stats showed a fairly even match, but Marian proved to be the better executers in front of goal whereas Taylor struggled to have their shot attempts be on goal or they found the hands of Noelle Rolfsen. The Knights fired off 18 shot attempts to the Trojan's 11 in the game.
Jacelyn Smith was the first to strike for Marian in the 12th minute as she put one past the Taylor keeper on the assist from Allie Schlom to give the Knights the early 1-0 lead in the first half. Minutes later, Schlom was on the opposite end of the ball as she booted one in the back of the net to take the 2-0 advantage. Taylor would answer in the 33rd minute with Sophie Snyder putting one in the goal, but Erin Oleksak responded before the end of the half as she knocked one in to score her 14th goal on the season and give Marian the 3-1 lead at the break.
The goals continued to come for Marian in the second half with the final three goals of the game coming in about the first 12 minutes of play in the half. Naomi Walters was the first to score after a ball played from Marian Corro Celma, before Isabelle Stanfield scored her first goal of the season. In the 59th minute, Walters hit Oleksak for her second goal of the game to give Marian their final goal and take the 6-1 lead.
The Knights five goal advantage proved to be too much for the Trojans to come back from as they would go on to win.
Oleksak led the way for Marian with a pair of goals on seven shots taken, while Schlom scored one goal that proved to be the game winner and added an assist. Smith, Stanfield, and Walters all each added a goal for the Knights, while Walters and Corro Celma each added an assists as well. Rolfsen played the full 90 minutes in goal, picking up three saves in the win to improve to 14-0-2 on the season.
Marian will wrap up the regular season at Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday at 2 PM. With a win over the Wildcats, the Knights can claim outright Crossroads League Champions.
