Saint Louis, Mo. – The No. 7 Marian women's soccer team took care of business on the road as they defeated No. 3 Central Methodist in a top-10 showdown behind goals from Kiley Jones and Naomi Walters. With the win over the Eagles, the Knights move to 3-0-1 on the season.
Both teams were on the search for a goal early, with Central Methodist taking the first shot at the nine-minute mark before Walters took the first attempt for the Knights a little over a minute later, but saw it go wide right.
After the Knights goal, the Eagles fired off three more shot attempts with two of them being saved by Noelle Rolfsen. The Knights and Eagle defenses were the story the next 14 minutes, neither team being able to make any attempts at goal before Erin Oleksak had a look at goal, but her attempt would go high.
Jones and Stephanie Ramos teamed up at the 38:50 mark as Jones scored her first collegiate goal off the assist from Ramos, giving Marian the 1-0 lead. The host were able to fire off a last second chance for a goal, but Rolfsen came up with the save to give the Knights the 1-0 lead going into the break.
Oleksak kicked things off for the Knights at the start of the second half, firing a shot that would go wide left. Not long after, Walters was able to capitalize and knock one in the back of the net to give the Knights the 2-0 lead.
At the 60:30 mark, the Eagles answered with a goal of their own to cut the lead back 2-1. The host looked to continue their offensive attack as they took seven more shots in the remainder of the half. Even with the offensive threat made by Central Methodist, Marian's defense held strong and Walters early goal in the half proved to be the game winner.
The Knights fired off seven shots on the day, capitalizing on two of them. Oleksak led the shot category for Marian, notching three while Walters took two. Lindsey Stoughton and Jones each added one a piece. Ramos had the lone assist for the Knights while Rolfsen came up big in the net, making six saves on seven shots on goal, while allowing only one goal. With the Knights win, Rolfsen improves to 3-0-1 on the season.
Marian will be back in action September 5 as they continue their trip in St. Louis, taking on Missouri Baptist University at 12 PM.
