St. Louis, Mo. - The Marian women's soccer team dominated possession throughout their second match of the Labor Day weekend, and came away with a 2-0 shutout victory at Missouri Baptist Monday afternoon. Marian's win improves their season mark to 4-0-1 overall on the year.
The Knights dominated possession in the first half, starting on the attack early by earning a pair of corner kicks and Kiley Jones shot in the first 11 minutes of action. Marian kept earning opportunites for a goal over the next 20 minutes, getting shot attempts from four different players in the span while also earning a pair of corner kicks. The pressure of the Marian offense forced cracks in the Spartans defense, and helped Marian produce a goal in the 31st minute as Erin Oleksak collected a turnover from 15 yards out, punching the ball past the goal keeper for the game's first goal.
Marian picked up three more chances over the final 14 minutes of the half looking to double their score, but the chances came empty. In the first half Marian took nine shot attempts while allowing zero Spartan shots.
It took just nine minutes into the second half for the Knights to double their score, as Marian kept the pressure on the Missouri Baptist defense. Naomi Walters ripped a shot on goal five minutes in, and despite the chance being denied the visitors were able to get possession back. Four minutes later, Lindsey Stoughton created a scoring chance, taking a touch from the left side of the box and playing to her right, striking the ball across the pitch and into the goal for her first collegiate score.
Stoughton's goal stood as the final score in the match, as Marian held a 5-1 advantage in shots over the final 35 minutes. The Spartans lone opportunity came in the 70th minute on a header, but Noelle Rolfsen came up with the save on the play to keep the clean sheet.
In the 2-0 victory, the Knights took 16 shots with seven looks going on goal. Stoughton led the team with three shots and the insurance goal, while Oleksak had two shots and the game-winning goal. Walters and Allie Schlom each had two shots in the win for Marian. Rolfsen's second shutout of the season came with little work, making one save in her 90 minutes of work.
Marian will continue their busy week on Wednesday evening, playing the second act of a home doubleheader with the men's team, as both host St. Francis (Ill.). The men's match will kickoff at 5 p.m., with the women's slated to begin approximately 30 minutes after the first match is complete.
