Marian Closes Non-Conference Slate With Commanding Road Win Over Concordia

Ann Arbor, Mich. - The Marian women's basketball team ended their non-conference slate on a high note Saturday afternoon, earning a one-sided 76-37 victory over Concordia University. The final win of the 2023 calendar year for the women give them a 12-1 overall record entering 2024.

It took nearly two minutes to take the lid off the basket Saturday, but a layup from Kinnidy Garrard got Marian's offense in gear in the slow-paced opening stanza. The Knights led throughout the opening quarter, as contributions from Aliyah Evans and Abbey McNally held the visitors in the lead. The Cardinals would stay within a basket of Marian for most of the first quarter, but were never able to take a lead, with a three-point play from Evans securing the opening quarter lead. Garrard scored the final point for the Knights in the first quarter, as Marian held Concordia scoreless for the final two minutes en route to building a 15-10 lead.

In the second quarter Marian took off and put the game in their hands, as Ella Collier got involved with the offense scoring the quarter's first points. A layup from Allison Bosse doubled the lead as the Knights pushed ahead 20-10, and as the quarter wore on Marian's continued to pour it on with Collier and Evans adding to Marian's lead. Josie Trabel made an impact to the offense after checking in and scored four of Marian's 23 second quarter points, as her basket with 60 seconds remaining in the half gave Marian a 38-19 lead going into the break.

Marian put the game to rest in the third quarter, as their offense scored 26 points in the quarter while their defense limited the Cardinals to just 10 total points. Garrard and Bosse started the scoring onslaught, while a three from Ella Collier helped extend Marian's 9-0 run that put a 28-point difference on the board. Collier and Garrard soon put Marian on top by 30 points in the quarter, and as the period hit it's waning moments Tamia Perryman converted a three-point play helping the guests take a one-sided 64-29 lead into the fourth quarter.

Marian allowed only two made field goals in the third quarter, and in the fourth quarter kept their intensity going as they held the Cardinals to eight points in closing minutes. Marian out-scored the Cardinals 12-8 in the final quarter as they closed their 76-37 win, as Kiley McNally and Kenna Gray helped lead the offense.

Garrard finished the afternoon with a team-high 15 points, while Collier and Evans each scored 11 points in the win. Tamia Perryman scored 10 points off the bench, and in total 12 different Knights scored at least one point in the win.

The Knights return to Crossroads League play as the calendar flips to 2024, with Marian hosting Goshen College on January 3. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
