WINONA LAKE, Ind. - The Marian men's soccer team extended their unbeaten streak to three consecutive games in Crossroads League play on Saturday afternoon, picking up a 3-1 victory at Grace College. Marian's second win of the CL season gives them a 2-1-1 record in the league, and an overall mark of 9-2-2.
Grace took first ownership of possession on Saturday, registering the first shot attempt of the afternoon 12 minutes into play. Marian won back possession and established a rhythm, seeing a strike by
Sebastian Gonzalez be denied by Matteo Conci in the 19th minute. The Knights continued to control the pace after the Gonzalez attack, getting shots by
Kyle Alb and corner kicks from
Yoshiaki Takeishi. The persistence paid off with 14:21 remaining in the first half, as Donocan Doolittle set up
Phillip Seifert for the game's first goal, pushing Marian ahead 1-0.
Marian maintained a level head going into half as they protected their 1-0 lead, committing just four fouls to the Lancers' 10, while Grace recorded a pair of first half yellow cards.
In the second half, the Knights drew their second penalty kick of the match, as the Lancer keeper Conci committed a foul on a striking Knight.
Sebastian Gonzalez lined up for the penalty kick, and slammed it past the Lancer keeper to propel Marian ahead 2-0 with over 35 minutes to play. Grace would finish the match with 10 players after Vasco Tavares was shown a red card in the 61st minute, and Marian took advantage seven minutes later as Doolittle recorded his second assist of the day, finding
Matthew Loo for a goal.
Loo's goal gave Marian a 3-0 edge, which would be more than enough as Marian was able to shake off a 76th minute goal, ending the afternoon on top 3-1.
Grace would end the match with a 12-7 advantage in shot attempts, however the Knights capitalized on their chances, scoring three goals on their six shots on target. Gonzalez and Seifert each took two shots and scored one goal, while Loo scored on his only attempt of the game.
Evan Dawdy and
Kyle Alb recorded the other two shots for Marian, and
Donovan Doolittle recorded both assists. In goal,
Juan Torres recorded his second win of the week, making three saves in 90 minutes of work.
Fouls in the second half made for a physical finish to the contest, as each team was whistled 11 times. Grace recorded five different cards in the game including one yellow, while Marian recorded four, including a red card issued for
Kyle Alb for picking up his second yellow of the match.
Marian will look to push their undefeated stretch to four matches in a row next Saturday, as they host Spring Arbor at 7:00 p.m.
