Box Score 2 Melbourne, Fla. - The Marian softball team earned a pair of wins on their second day during their spring break trip in Florida, defeating Michigan-Dearborn and Roosevelt. The Knights two wins improves their season record to 6-0 overall.
Game 1 | Marian 11-3 Michigan-Dearborn | 6 Innings
The Knights fell behind early in game one on the day as
Jaylah Guilliam saw a two-out double turn a previous walk into a run in the top of the first inning. Marian didn't trail long after Guilliam recorded the final out, as
Savannah Harweger reached base with an infield hit and then reached third on a stolen base and wild pitch.
Anna Pritchett and
Abby Madere followed with back to back walks, setting up
Sierra Norman who tripled to right-center, taking advantage of the large outfield to put Marian on top 3-1.
Guilliam found a groove after her first inning and struckout three batters between the second and third innings, retiring the side in order in each inning. In the fourth inning the senior pitcher faced the minimum as a double play ended the inning after allowing a walk, and in the home side she gained run support as Harweger roped a single to score two runs to ignite a five-run frame.
Mackenzie Dalton scored on an error to take Marian's sixth run of the game, and a two-out double from Norman would score two more runs, giving Marian a comfortable 8-1 lead.
Michigan-Dearborn would get back a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning as
Lauren Mayer came on to pitch, as the second-year Knight gave up three hits that resulted in two runs. Mayer settled in and ended the inning with a flyout, and after pitching a clean sixth got the support from her offense. A walk drawn by Harweger to start the sixth would be the ninth run for the Knights, as a stolen base and pair of sacrifices scored the fifth-year senior.
Sierra Norman and
Lily Wendt reached base with back to back hits on a single and double, and after a walk to
Hayley Greene, an error off of
Abbey Hoffman's bat scored two runs, giving Marian the run-rule 11-3 victory.
Guilliam earned her second win on the season in the circle, allowing one hit with three strikeouts in four innings of work. Norman had a monster game at the plate, leading Marian with three hits and five RBI. Harweger had two hits and scored three runs, and four other Knights each had one base hit in the win.
Game 2 | Marian 2-0 Roosevelt
Marian's fourth game of the week was a pitchers' dual, as
Olivia Stunkel and Kate Sisson locked horns. Stunkel got off to a perfect start through eight outs before a two-out single in the third ruined her streak, but the junior stranded the runner with her second strikeout of the game. Marian was able to get a runner on base against Sisson in the first inning, but were held scoreless through six outs of softball as the Lakers slowed the Knights' offense.
The bats were able to connect in the bottom of the third for Marian as
Brooke Knox delivered a one-out single, and a triple from
Savannah Harweger drove in the junior to score the game's first run. Marian's 1-0 lead would stand as the inning concluded, and held into the sixth inning as Stunkel pitched three scoreless frames. Runners would reach base in each of the three innings, but the junior pitcher prevented any runs from crossing the plate by getting a strikeout to end each frame to protect the shutout.
In the bottom of the sixth Marian got an insurance run for their pitcher, starting the inning by loading the bases on singles from Harweger and
Anna Pritchett and a pitch that drilled
Abby Madere. The Knights were unable to fully cash in on the bases loaded opportunity as a double play picked up two outs, but a well-hit single from
Lily Wendt would drive in Pritchett, giving Marian a 2-0 lead. Stunkel protected the two-run advantage in the seventh, completing the shutout with a three-up, three-down inning to secure the 2-0 victory.
Stunkel allowed three hits in her complete game victory, as the junior improved to 3-0 overall on the season. Stunkel's shutout featured seven strikeouts to just two walks, getting 10 flyouts in the win. At the plate, Harweger was a perfect 3-3, driving in a run in the win. Pritchett, Wendt, and Knox each had a hit in the win, with the sophomore Wendt also delivering an RBI.
Marian will be off on Wednesday, before returning to the diamond for a pair of late games on Thursday against Lourdes and Lawrence Tech.
