Fort Wayne, Ind. - The Marian softball team split with the University of Saint Francis Cougars on the road, as the Knights won game one with a score of 4-0 and fell in game two with a score of 4-5. The Knights are now 26-6 overall and 14-4 in the conference.
Game 1 | Marian 4-0 St. Francis
After a scoreless inning for both sides, the Knights got on base early in the top of the second with
Sierra Norman reaching first on an error by second base.
Abbey Hofmann followed up quickly with a single through the right side to allow Norman to score the first run of the game to allow Marian to take the 1-0 lead.
After two dry innings for both sides
Brooke Knox grounded out to third with loaded bases which allowed
Lily Wendt to score the second run of the game for the Knights in the top of the fifth inning bringing the score 2-0. Marian got the bats rolling for a final time in the top of the seventh with
Hayley Greene hitting a deep home run to extend their lead.
Savannah Harweger took charge, scoring on a throw from a fielder's choice to claim the 4-0 win for the Knights in game one.
Marian tallied 10 hits with
Hayley Greene,
Sierra Norman, and
Savannah Harweger tallying two each.
Grace Meyer,
Abbey Hofmann,
Lily Wendt, and
Anna Pritchett all had one hit for the game.
Olivia Stunkel pitched the complete game striking out four batters for the day.
Game 2 | Marian 4-5 St. Francis
Similarly to game one the Knights got on the board in the second inning after a dry first inning for both teams.
Lily Wendt singled down the left field line allowing
Grace Meyer to score the first run of the second game. Shortly after
Savannah Harweger singled to the shortstop allowing
Abbey Hofmann to score, claiming the 2-0 lead for the Knights.
The Knights continued to increase their lead with
Hayley Greene singling into center field to allow Meyer to score another run for the Knights increasing the lead 3-0 at the bottom of the fifth. In attempts to decrease the Knights lead the Cougars scored their first two runs of the day off of a single down the left field line and a sacrifice ground out to second base to bring the score 3-2 in favor of the Knights at the end of the fifth inning.
Marian continued to increase their lead after a Harweger bunt and stolen base and an
Abby Madere walk, Norman grounded out to shortstop to allow for Harweger to score a run for the Knights to increase their lead back to two runs and bring the score 4-2.
In final attempts to push at the Knights lead the Cougars scored two runs off of double through the left side to tie up the game 4-4. The Cougars continued to push to score the final run of the game to bring the final score 5-4 and claim the win.
The Knights tallied seven hits in game two with
Savannah Harweger leading with two and
Abby Madere,
Grace Meyer,
Abbey Hofmann,
Hayley Greene, and
Lily Wendt having one hit each on the board. Harweger, Greene, Wendt, and Norman all tallied one RBI each in game two.
Macy Coan started off for the Knights in the circle striking out three batters, while
Jaylah Guilliam took the loss tallying one strikeout for the day.
The Knights will be back in action Tuesday, April 9th at home for a double header against the Grace College Lancers with first pitch set for 3:00 pm for game one.
