Box Score 2 INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian softball team split with the Grace College Lancers at home, as the Knights fell in game one with a score of 6-4 and won in game two with a score of 6-4. The Knights are now 27-7 overall and 15-5 in the conference.
Game 1 | Marian 4-6 Grace | 8 Innings
After two scoreless innings for both sides the Knights got the bats rolling with back-to-back doubles by
Brooke Knox and
Abby Madere in the bottom of the third. Knox hit a double deep into left field allowing
Savannah Harweger to score the first run of the game. Shortly after Madere hit a double deep into center field to allow Knox to score the second run to bring the 2-0 lead into the Marian hands.
After another pair of scoreless innings for both sides, the Lancers pushed at the Knights lead with a home run deep into left center to bring the game to a one run difference. On a two out game the visiting team took advantage of an error at short and a long throw to score the tying run of the game and bring the game 2-2 at the top of the fifth. The Lancers took advantage of a back-to-back double and single to bring in the third run for Grace to bring the game 3-2 in favor of the visitors.
The Knights shot back in the bottom of the seventh inning with Harweger bunting to get on base, shortly followed up by Madere singling down the left line to tie the game up 3-3 and push into extra innings for the first time this season.
The visitors were hungry for the win in the extra inning with a sacrifice fly out to center field to allow the Lancers to once again take the lead. Shortly after Grace's Huff singled into left field allowing two more runners to score bringing the score 6-3 going into the bottom of the eighth.
In an attempt to rally the Knights were only able to tally one run from Harweger singling into center field allowing
Emily Phillips to score the final run of the game and bring the final score 6-4 to allow the Lancers to claim the win in game one.
Marian tallied 12 runs with, Harweger leading the team with three, Madere and
Anna Pritchett weren't far behind tallying two each. Madere also led the team in RBI's with two.
Olivia Stunkel took the loss striking out three batters,
Abigail McPherson finished off game one pitching part of the last inning giving up one hit.
Game 2 | Marian 6-4 Grace
Grace opened up game two with an early 2-0 lead due to two singles to allow for the first two runs to be scored in the top of the first. Before the Knights had a chance to fire back there was lightning spotted pushing the game to a weather delay.
Once the game was back in play the Lancers continued to increase their lead in the top of the second with a sacrifice fly into right field allowing for the third run to be scored for Grace. The visitors had no sings of stopping with a home run hit deep into right center to increase the lead 4-0 going into the bottom of the third.
After a pair of scoreless innings for both sides, Marian got the bats rolling in the bottom of the fifth to have a huge inning in their favor.
Brooke Knox took advantage of an error by short stop to reach first base and allow
Jenna Minnix to score the first run of the game for the Knights.
Sierra Norman kept the runs coming with a sacrifice fly into right field to allow
Savannah Harweger to score another run for the Knights.
Grace Meyer came in clutch shortly after with a three-run home run into center field to allow
Abby Madere and Knox to score as well putting the 5-4 lead in the Knights hands.
The Knights defense and pitching kept the Lancers from crossing home plate in the top of the sixth. Marian sealed the deal with Norman singling into right center to allow Harweger to score the final run of the game and secure the 6-4 win for the Knights.
The Knights tallied eight hits in game two with, Harweger, Knox, Norman, Meyer,
Abbey Hofmann,
Lily Wendt,
Caroline Roop, and Minnix all claiming one each. Meyer lead the team in RBI's with three, and Norman was close behind with two.
Macy Coan got the start on the rubber striking out one batter during her outing.
Lauren Mayer came in as the relief taking the win and striking out one batter and only giving up one hit.
The Knights will be back in action tomorrow Wednesday, April 10th on the road for a double header against the Taylor University Trojans with first pitch set for 4:00 pm for game one.
