Mount Vernon, Ohio - In a late run the Marian men's soccer team shutout Mount Vernon Nazarene 2-0 on Wednesday evening. The Knights are now 7-2-3 overall on the season and 2-0-1 in the Crossroads League.
Marian opened up the game on a hot streak with eight shots before Mount Vernon could record a shot. Joao Antonio Roch,
Kyohei Kuroda,
Gustavo Nunes, and
Matthew Loo made up the eight shots. After the Cougars recorded their first shot,
Donovan Doolittle,
Diego Regueira,
Rafael Zambrano, and
Foslyn Grant all made up the Knights next seven shots but all came up short. Mount Vernon recorded one more shot in the half while Zambrao and Rocha each followed up with a shot that was saved by the goalie ending the half with a 0-0 tie.
The Knights continued to bring the heat into the second half with Wesseling, Doolittle, and Rocha each recorded a shot to open the second half. The Cougars were able to push back with a pair of shots but the Knights were able to follow up with a header shot from Nunes that was a tad wide. Nunes was able to take another chance and scored the first goal of the season capitalizing off of a penalty kick to put the Knights in the lead. Marian continued to push to extend the lead with Zambrano and Nunes both coming up short to the Cougars defense. Mount Vernon did not let up recording two more shots but Marian's defensive efforts and
Ricardo Marquez's skills in goal shined holding the Cougars scoreless. Each team continued to take chances with the Knights recording five shots and the Cougars recording three. Marian was able to get infront once more with Loo extending the lead with a goal in the 86th minute. The Cougars fired off a shot but came up short to
Mateo Garcia-Galan's efforts in goal finishing the game with a 2-0 win.
Gustavo Nunes and
Matthew Loo led the Knights with both goals while Nunes led the team in shots with six while Loo recorded three.
Donovan Doolittle and
Joao Antonio Rocha each recorded five shots while
Rafael Zambrano recorded four.
Foslyn Grant,
Josh Wesseling, and
Diego Regueira all recorded two while
Kyohei Kuroda recorded one. In goal
Ricardo Marquez gained the start and recorded the win recording six saves as
Mateo Garcia-Galan came in as relief for the final 16 minutes recording one shot .
Marian will be back in action on Saturday, October 4th as they take on No. 21 Grace in a ranked match up on the road at 1:30 p.m.
