INDIANAPOLIS - Two storied programs. An in-state matchup with the city of Indianapolis watching. Marian-UIndy and the Monumental Matchup is back.
On Friday, February 7, Marian University and the University of Indianapolis announced the two teams will resume their series with a home-and-home football agreement, reviving the crosstown series that was last played in 2016. The joint announcement marks the renewal of what has been dubbed the Monumental Matchup, named after the city's iconic centrally-located landmark.
Indianapolis' only two scholarship college football teams, the Knights and Greyhounds, will open the '25 slate at Marian with a week zero kickoff on Thursday, August. 28 at 6:05 p.m. from Ascension St. Vincent Field. Marian will then return to Key Stadium and the campus of UIndy on Saturday, August 29, 2026.
The crosstown meeting will be the first Monumental Matchup for current head coaches
Ted Karras Jr. of Marian and Chris Keevers of UIndy. Keevers served as UIndy's defensive coordinator in the first two matchups in '15 and '16, while Karras will coach his first game in the rivalry slate in '25.
"This is a great opportunity for the city of Indianapolis and for our football program," said head coach
Ted Karras Jr. on the resumption of the rivalry. "The matchup will give us an 11th game to our 2025 schedule, strengthening our schedule this coming season. The game will be a strong early test for our football team, and we look forward to opening our season under the lights on the West Side."
The rivalry series first began in 2015, and saw Marian come out victorious in the inaugural meeting by a final score of 28-22. The Knights then won in year two of the series, taking the 2016 victory in convincing style by winning 38-16 at Key Stadium.
The Knights recorded an 8-2 overall record last season, finishing with a 4-1 record in the MSFA Midwest League. Marian earned the MSFA Co-Championship in their first season as a member of the Midwest division. The Knights graduated 20 seniors from their 2024 roster.
UIndy went 10-2 last season, going 8-0 in the GLVC as they recorded a conference championship while reaching the NCAA Playoffs. The Greyhounds lost in the NCAA DII Playoffs against Grand Valley State 24-7 last season, and graduated 22 seniors from their 2024 roster.
The remainder of the Marian football schedule for the 2025 season will be announced later on in the month of February. Tickets will go on sale for the game and the 2025 season in the coming months, and an announcement will be made when sales go public.
