Indianapolis, Ind. - The Marian men's soccer team opened up the 2025 season with a 2-1 win over IU-Northwest Thursday evening. Marian starts out the season with a 1-0 overall record.
IU-Northwest opened up the game with the first goal at the 10 minute mark while
Gustavo Nunes quickly followed up with a shot a bit too wide. Three minutes later
Foslyn Grant leveled the game with a goal off of a pass from
Rafael Zambrano. Benefitting off of a foul Grant knocked it once more off of a penalty kick to record the 2-1 lead. The Knights offense continued to push recording four unanswered shots from
Kyohei Kuroda, Zambrano, and two from
Josh Wesseling. Marian unfortunalty was not able to increase their lead before the half ended out shooting the Red Hawks 8-1.
Zambrano opened up the second half with a shot on target that was saved by Collins of IU-Northwest. After 20 minutes of back and fourth action from each side the Red Hawks took a chance but came up short to
Mateo Garcia-Galan's defensive efforts in the goal. Marian's offense continued their push recording five more shots from
Samuel Wehaus,
Antonio Pratas, Wesseling, and two from Zambrano. After maintaining control of the game Marian was able to record the 2-1 win over IU-Northwest to open the season.
Grant scored the duo of goals for the Knights recording two shots.
Rafael Zambrano led the team in shots with four while two were on target. Zambrano recorded the solo assist on the evening. Josh Wessling got his hand in the recording three shots with two on target. In the goal Mateo Galan-Garcia earned his first win recording one save and one goal on the evening.Â
The Knights are back in action at home on Saturday, August 23rd as they take on Lawrence Tech at 4 p.m. at Ascension St. Vincent Field.
