Indianapolis, Ind. - The Marian men's soccer team opens up Crossroads League play with a 3-0 shutout win over Huntington. The Knights move to 6-2-2 overall on the season and 1-0 in the Crossroads League.
The Knights opened up the first half with a pair of shots by Gustavo Nunes only to be broken up by a shot from the Foresters. Three minutes later Samuel Wehaus excelled claiming the first goal of the game with an assist from Nunes to take the early 1-0 lead. Less than five minutes later Wehaus took charge once more scoring his second goal of the game with the assist from Matthew Loo to increase the lead to two. Huntington fired back with a shot that was saved by Ricardo Marquez but Marian followed up with a header shot from Wehaus that was a tad too high. The Forester's continue to take chances taking six shots with four coming up short to Marquez's defensive skills in goal ending the half with a 2-0 lead for the Knights.
Josh Wesseling and Wehaus opened up the second half with a shot each but came up short with Huntington firing bak a pair of shots wide. Nunes took his chances once more and came out successful with the assist from
Kyohei Kuroda to increase the lead to three goals in the 68th minute. Wesseling took another chance but got his shot blocked and was followed up with three shots by the Foresters with two saved by Marquez to end the game with the 3-0 shutout win.
Samuel Wehaus led the way with four shots and a brace to take the lead for the Knights. Nunes was close behind with three shots and one goal while Wesseling recorded two shots. Kyohei Kurdoa, Nunes, and
Matthew Loo each recorded one assist on the day. In goal
Ricardo Marquez earned his first start and first win of the year with a career-high of eight saves on the day.Â
The Knights are back in action on Saturday, September 27th as they travel up to Goshen, Ind. at 3 pm to take on the Maple Leafs.Â
