Knights Fall to No. 3 Indiana Wesleyan in Final Road Game of the Year

Marion, Ind. - The Marian men's basketball team fell to the No. 3 Wildcats on Wednesday evening. After the loss, the Knights moved to 5-22 overall and 2-15 in the Crossroads League. 

Marian struck early with a pair of baskets from Ron Rutland II and Aidan Franks back-to-back. The Knights continued to extend their lead 12-9 early in the first half, with Josiah Gustin and Dylan Moles recording key baskets. Indiana Wesleyan knocked down Marian's lead with four baskets in a row to take the five-point lead into their own hands. Luke Carroll and Rutland III fired off a pair of baskets to tie the game at 17 with 10 minutes remaining in the half. 

Each team fired off a trio of baskets with Carroll recording one and Blake Russell recording a pair to put the Wildcats in the one point lead with 5:42 remaining in the half. Indiana Wesleyan continued to extend its lead, but Aaron Humphrey Jr. fired off a pair of baskets to take the game back into the Knights' hands with a 27-26 lead. Each team countered eachother's baskets in the two-minute range with Humphrey Jr. and Franks firing off baskets for Marian, but Indiana Wesleyan was able to tie the game at 32 once again. The Wildcats closed out the half with a pair of baskets, taking the 37-32 lead over the Knights. 

Three layups opened up the second half with Gustin recording the basket for the Knights, but the Wildcats were able to fire off a pair, extending their lead to 41-34. Dylan Moles was able to bring the game back within four with a trio of free throws. Each team fired off a pair of baskets with Franks and Moles recording the baskets for Marian, bringing the score 46-42 in favor of the Wildcats. Indiana Wesleyan fired off four baskets, extending its lead to 10. The Knights were able to fire off four baskets from Humphrey Jr. and Rutland III while Indiana Wesleyan fired off two, decreasing their lead to seven. Indiana Wesleyan fired off a three-pointer and a pair of free throws, but Joshua Renfro and Russell broke up the run, bringing the score 61-54 in favor of the home team.

Indiana Wesleyan went on a three-basket run to open the final minutes of the game. Marian was able to break up the run with a dunk by Josiah Gustin to bring the margin down to 68-56. Indiana Wesleyan continued to extend its lead with five baskets compared to the Knights' three by Humphrey Jr. and Gustin. With the 20-point lead going into the final two minutes of the game, Indiana Wesleyan outscored Marian with four baskets compared to the Knights' multiple free throws, ending the game with an 88-68 loss to the No. 3 Wildcats.   

Aaron Humphrey Jr. led the way with 17 points while also recording two steals, assists, and rebounds. Luke Carroll and Blake Carroll led the way with six rebounds each, while Ron Rutland III and Aidan Franks led the way in assists with four each. 

Marian will be back in action on Saturday as they host Huntington in their final game of the year in the P.E. Center at 3 PM.
