Softball Closes Out Weekend With Sweep Over Bethel

Indianapolis, Ind. - The Marian softball team swept Bethel (Ind.) at home Saturday afternoon. After the pair of wins, Marian advanced to 17-2 overall on the season and 9-1 in the Crossroads League.

Game 1 | Marian 8-1 Bethel
Marian got off to an early lead with Ally Malone walking with bases loaded to score Delaney Rundle. Lily Wendt was able to follow up in the next at bat, grounding out to shortstop to score Abby Madere on the play, increasing the lead 2-0. After keeping Bethel scoreless in the first inning, Madere was able to strike again, grounding out to second, scoring Abbey Hofmann, extending the Knights' lead. 

In the top of the third, the Pilots were able to strike with a sacrifice fly to center field and score the runner, bringing Marian's lead back down to two. The Knights followed up in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run home run from Madere to score Hofmann and increase the lead 5-1.

After a dry fifth inning for both sides, Marian was able to strike for the final time in game one with a single from Malone scoring Rundle. Jaelyn Phillips was able to quickly follow up with a scoring on a growing error by the catcher. Ella Piercy extended the lead, singling in Malone, increasing the margin to seven. After three quick outs from the pilots at the top of the seventh, Marian was able to record the 8-1 win in game one.

Abbey Hofmann led the way, going 3-4 from the plate, while Abby Madere went 2-3 from the plate with three RBIs. Ally Malone also went 2-3 from the plate, tallying one RBI. Macy Coan took the win, improving to 6-0 on the year. Coan struck out three batters and gave up 6 hits.

Game 2 | Marian 6-3 Bethel
Unlike game one, Bethel struck first in the game with an RBI single in the top of the first. Marian was able to quickly follow up with Abby Madere, singling to shortstop, scoring Abby Hofmann, tying up the game.

After a dry second inning for both teams, the Knights got back on the board with a ground out from Ally Malone to the pitcher, scoring Madere. Lily Wendt followed up with a ground out to shortstop, scoring Mati Hughes, taking the 3-1 lead. 

Bethel pushed back at Marian's lead with a double into right field knocking the margin down to one. The Knights benefited from a pair of back-to-back walks with bases, loaded scoring, Madere and Hughes bringing the score 5-2. The Pilots struck again in the top of the sixth with a fielder's choice, bringing Marian's lead down to two. Malone was quick to fight back with a sacrifice fly into right field to score Hofmann and bring the margin back to three. Alayna Tesnar came in to pitch for the final inning, recording a pair of strikeouts and a ground out allowing Marian to take the 6-3 win.

Abby Madere led the way, going a perfect 3-3 from the plate and recording one RBI. Abbey Hofmann went 3-4 from the plate while Ally Malone and Lily Wendt led the way, recording a pair of RBIs each. Lexi Smith took the win, pitching six innings and recording two strikeouts. Alayna Tesnar pitched one inning, striking out two batters as well.

Marian will be back in action on Tuesday, March 24th, as they host (RV) Indiana Wesleyan University with game one set for a 3 PM start time at the MU Softball Diamond.
