Goshen, Ind. - The Marian softball team earned the regular season sweep over Goshen with a pair of run-rule wins Sunday afternoon. After the wins, Marian moves to 24-11 overall on the season and 16-10 in the Crossroads League.
Game 1 | Marian 8-0 Goshen | 6 Innings
After a dry first inning for both teams, Mallorie Beutel hit her first career home run as a Knight into center field, scoring Ally Malone and taking the 2-0 lead over Goshen. After three quick outs and one runner stranded on base in the bottom of the second, Marian was able to hold Goshen scoreless. Delaney Rundle extended the Knights' lead with a double into left field to score Abbey Hofmann. Mati Hughes was able to follow with another double into left field to score Rundle and increase the lead 4-0.
Both teams went scoreless through the fourth inning, but the Knights continued to dominate with a sacrifice fly from Abby Madere to score Hofmann, followed by Wendt reaching first on an error by the shortstop and Rundle scoring on the play, increasing the lead to six. After holding the Maple Leafs scoreless in the bottom of the fifth, Marian struck one final time, with Madere doubling into right center to score Hofmann. Followed up with a single to the left from Hughes to score Madere. After three straight outs in the bottom of the sixth, Marian took the 8-0 lead lead win in game one.
Delaney Rundle and Mati Hughes led the way in game one, both going 2-4 from the plate with Hughes recording two RBIs and Rundle recording one. Abby Madere and Mallorie Beutel both went 1-2 from the plate, each recording a pair of RBIs. In the circle, Lexi Smith took the win, earning the start and pitching all six innings. Smith only gave up one hit and struck out four batters in her win.
Game 2 | Marian 17-9 Goshen | 6 Innings
Unlike the first game, the Knights were able to strike in the first inning with a double into right-center from
Lily Wendt to score both
Mati Hughes and
Abbey Hofmann, taking a two-run lead. Marian continued to extend their lead with a single from
Delaney Rundle, scoring
Mallorie Beutel in the second inning, followed by both
Alex Kiemeyer and Hofmann hitting RBI singles in the third to increase the margin 6-0.
Goshen pushed back with their first runs of the day with a two-run single in the bottom of the third, bringing Marian's lead down to four. After a dry fourth inning for both teams,
Ella Piercy was able to score off a fielder's choice from Madere. Hofmann was able to follow up in the next at-bat scoring off of a steal attempt from Madere, increasing the Knights' lead 8-2. The Maple Leafs fought back with a three-run double in the bottom of the fifth, chipping away at Marian's lead of 3.
It was a big sixth inning for Marian, scoring nine runs with Hughes, Malone,
Mystic Means, Beutel, Piercy, Madere, Rundle, Hofmann, and
Jaelyn Phillips all scoring in the run, increasing the lead to 11. Goshen made their final attempts to chip Marian's lead down with a pair of RBI singles and a run scored off of a ground out, but came up short, ending the game with the 17-9 win for the Knights in six innings.
Abbey Hofmann and
Mati Hughes led the way in game two, each going 3-4 from the plate and recording three RBIs each.
Abby Madere and
Lily Wendt each recorded a pair of RBIs, while
Delaney Rundle,
Mallorie Beutel, and
Alex Kiemeyer recorded one each.
Alayna Tesnar earned the start, pitching 3.2 innings, striking out four batters in her outing.
Macy Coan came in as relief, pitching two innings and earning the win, striking out three batters.
Katie Lackman came in for the last half inning, facing six batters, and struck out one.
The Knights are back in action on Tuesday, April 14th, at home as they host Grace College at 3 & 5 PM.
