Ypsilanti, Mich. - After multiple weather delays on Tuesday that forced the conclusion of round one to Wednesday, the Marian women's golf team persevered through the wind and rain and completed the opening round in 13th place at the NAIA National Championship. Despite the weather impeding play, the Knights ended the first round with three golfers inside the top-50 individually.
Strong winds and rainstorms made play difficult as Marian began the opening round in the early wave on Tuesday morning, suffering multiple delays in the round. Play would ultimately be suspended on Monday with the Knights still three golfers away from completing the first round, seeing Marian near the bottom of the 30-team field during the initial pause of play.
When play resumed,
Keara Eder finished a competitive round one score with a 77, making three birdies in her first 18 holes. Eder eventually finished the round in 32nd place after the round saw its conclusion. Behind Eder on the Marian leaderboard were
Jordan Adam and
Emma Weiler, who each finished with a score of 78, good for a tie in 46th position following the first 18 holes. Adam and Weiler each made two birdies in their rounds.
Hailey Kirkland and
Maria Kennard completed their first round before the halt in play on Tuesday, with Kirkland firing an 82 and Kennard scoring an 86. Kirkland's score was good for the final placement in the top-100 on the individual leaderboard.Â
Marian ended play in 24th position as half the field turned in their round one scorecards, and on Wednesday benefited from multiple high scores, ascending to the top-15 overall. The Knights enter the second round in 13th place, tied with William Carey with a score of 315. Marian is one shot behind Cumberland and two shots behind Indiana Wesleyan. Eder, Weiler, Adam, and Kirkland's score made up the Knights' efforts in round one.Â
Dalton State leads the tournament with a 301 score, while Truett McConnell and British Columbia trail the leader by two and four strokes, respectively.Â
Due to the weather delays that postponed the majority of golfers playing in round one, the tournament has been condensed to a 54-hole event. The Knights will play the second round of the tournament on Thursday afternoon, with
Hailey Kirkland teeing off at 1:20 to begin the round, while the third and final round of the tournament will be held on Friday. Only individuals and teams that make the cut will compete in Friday's final round.
