INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian Men's Soccer team opened up the 2026 campaign with a 1-0 win over Saint Francis (Ill.) at home Thursday evening.
Samuel Wehaus claimed the first goal of the year, shutting out the Fighting Saints. The Knights open up the year with a 1-0 overall record.
Marian took charge early in the match, recording three shots in the opening 20 minutes of the match. While
Ricardo Marquez and the Knights defense held the Fighting Saints to two shots in the opening half. Marian continued to take chances, recording one penalty kick and seven more shots in the first half. Even tho three of the 11 shots Marian took were on target, the game stayed tied 0-0 going into halftime.
The Knights continued to use the home field advantage, recording six more shots before Saint Francis (Ill.) was able to record one. After a few more minutes of back-and-forth action between the opponents, Marian took charge after a corner kick, with Wehaus recording the sole goal of the game off of
Sotirios Kostakis' corner kick to put the Knights in the lead 1-0.
Keiji Nakamae and Wehaus tried to add to the score in the final ten minutes of the matchup but ended up just shy of taking the one-goal win over Saint Francis (Ill.) to open the season.
Leonard Assouan led the way, recording five shots with three on target, while Wehaus was close behind with four and two on target. Off the bench,
Keiji Nakamae led the way with three shots and one on target. In the goal,
Ricardo Marquez took the start and the win as well as recording three saves in the process.
Marian will be back in action on Saturday, August 22nd at 4 PM as they travel to Southfield, Mich. to take on Lawrence Tech to close out the opening week of the 2026 season.
