Cycling opens Collegiate Track Nationals with two silver medals, strong sprint showing

Written by Finley Aspholm

INDIANAPOLIS – The Marian cycling team started the 2026 USA Cycling Collegiate Track National Championships on Thursday at Major Taylor Velodrome, earning two silver medals in the team pursuit and putting seven men and six women into the sprint competition's top 16.

Racing began Thursday morning with the 200-meter sprint qualifying. The Knights placed six riders in the top 10 of the men's qualifying, led by Joshua Trerise, who posted the top time of 10.735 at an average speed of 67.070km/h. Javon Ramroop followed in second, with Jackson Clary third, Fred Meredith fourth, Jordan Callum fifth, Jonah Hover seventh and James Halverson ninth.

The Marian women also had a strong showing, placing six riders inside the top 11. Breanna Winter led the Knights in third, followed by Mairen Lawson in fourth, Alex Hill fifth, Sierra Samhammer eighth, Hannah Paine ninth and Claire Kudlata 11th.

The top 16 riders from each competition advanced to the sprint round of 16, where riders raced head-to-head to narrow the field to eight competitors who would advance to the evening session.
Marian advanced four women and seven men into the evening session. Sierra Samhammer, Breanna Winter, Mairen Lawson and Alex Hill represented the Knights in the women's sprint, while Joshua Trerise, James Halvorson, Javon Ramroop, Jonah Hover, Jackson Clary, Fred Meredith and Jordan Callum advanced on the men's side.

The team pursuit followed the morning sprint qualifying, with both Marian squads earning silver medals in the 4-kilometer event.
In the women's final, Claire Kudlata, Mairen Lawson, Hannah Paine and Anna Zyromski finished second in a time of 5:02.766 (47.561km/h), just over nine seconds behind Colorado Mesa University.
The Marian men's team of Fred Meredith, Jackson Clary, David Kosela and Shaurya Sheoran also claimed silver, stopping the clock at 4:26.197 (54.095km/h). The Knights finished just 1.254 seconds behind Colorado Mesa.

The sprint competition returned Thursday evening, but weather forced a pause in racing. Rain showers moved through Indianapolis around 6 p.m., delaying the evening session. A team of volunteers worked diligently with leaf blowers to ensure the track was dry so competition could resume.
Once the track was ready, the remaining sprint rounds continued, with Marian riders making up much of the podium fight.

In the men's competition, Javon Ramroop secured third place, while Jordan Callum finished fourth and James Halverson took fifth. Jonah Hover finished seventh and Fred Meredith eighth. Joshua Trerise and Jackson Clary advanced to the gold medal round and will race for the national title Friday morning.
On the women's side, Mairen Lawson secured third place and Breanna Winter finished fourth. Alex Hill took sixth and Sierra Samhammer eighth.

The rain returned before the women's and men's gold medal rounds could be completed, forcing both championship matchups to be postponed until Friday morning. Trerise and Clary will battle for the men's national title, while Rita Fedewa of Belmont Abbey and Ella Sabo of Colorado Mesa will race for the women's sprint championship.

With two silver medals already secured and national titles still on the line, the Knights will return to Major Taylor Velodrome Friday morning to finish what they started on Day 1.

Marian Cycling will continue racing through Sunday at the 2026 USA Cycling Collegiate Track National Championships. Results can be followed throughout the week through https://tracktiming.live/eventpage.php?EventId=26036 .
