Knights Shutout Red Wolves to Close Non-Conference Play

Story Links

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. - The Marian men's soccer team closed out non-conference play with a 3-0 win over IU-East. Rafael Zambrano led the way, scoring one goal and an assist in the match.

After a prolonged lightning delay, the Knights got off to a slower start than they have in previous matches, allowing IU-East to record the first couple of shots. Samuel Wehaus bounced back, firing off a pair with one on goal and one a tad high, before Josh Wesseling was able to reach the back of the net and take the lead. Marian then took control of the match, firing off another shot on target from Wehaus, followed up by a goal two minutes later, increasing the lead to two. The Knights maintained control throughout the rest of the half, recording eight more shots, with four being saved by the Red Wolves' goalie, ending the half with a 2-0 lead.

Marian quickly came out of halftime, firing off four more shots in the opening five minutes of the second half. IU-East pushed back seven minutes later with a shot that was saved by Tristan Edwards in goal for the Knights. Zambrano quickly countered with a shot that was also saved, as well as his first goal of the match, with an assist from Gerald Ramirez to increase the lead to three. Marian continued to maintain the game with four more shots before the Red Wolves could record one on target. The rest of the match was very back and forth between teams, with Marian recording six shots and IU-East dishing out three but coming up short, allowing the Knights to record the 3-0 shutout win.

Rafael Zambrano led the way, going a perfect 4-for-4 with shots on goal while recording one goal and an assist. Samuel Wehaus also had multiple shots, with six and three on target as well as one goal. Off the bench, Richard Faleye led the way, tallying five shots with three on target. Gustavo Nunes and Gerald Ramirez also recorded one assist each in the match. In goal, Tristan Edwards recorded his fifth win with five saves on the evening.

Marian will be back in action on Wednesday, September 23rd, as they open up Crossroads League play, taking on Huntington on the road at 7 p.m.
