INDIANAPOLIS, IND. - The Marian men's soccer team takes a 5-1 statement win over Mount Vernon Nazarene Wednesday evening. Samuel Wehaus and Leonard Assouan led the way for the Knights, each recording a brace.

Each team opened up the match with 15 minutes of back-and-forth action, with Marian recording four shots, two on target and one blocked, compared to the Cougars one on goal that Tristan Edwards saved in goal. Marian was quick to break the dry spell with three goals within three minutes from Rafael Zambrano, Leonard Assouan, and Samuel Wehaus to take the 3-0 lead in the 18th minute of play. Less than four minutes later, Wehaus reached the back of the net for the second time of the night to increase the lead to four. Mount Vernon fought back with a pair of shots before the Knights were quickly able to fire off a trio, with one on target to counter. The Cougars controlled the remainder of the half, recording three shots, all saved by Edwards. In the final three minutes before halftime, the Cougars were able to benefit from a foul on the Knights in the box to get on the board with a penalty kick to decrease Marian's lead to 4-1.

In the second half, each team recorded a shot before Mount Vernon fired off four, with two saved by Edwards and one blocked by the Knights' defense. Joshua Pearson attempted to get on the board after a corner kick from Zambrano but came up short against the Cougars' goalie. Mount Vernon attacked once more with a shot saved, but Assouan was able to quickly counter with his second goal of the night. Mount Vernon controlled the next 10 minutes of play with five more shots, but all came up short. The rest of the match was pretty back and forth, with the Knights recording three more shots and the Cougars recording two, but they came up short, ending the match with the 5-1 win for Marian.

Leonard Assouan led the Knights offensively, recording two goals and two assists, while Samuel Wehaus recorded two goals and one assist. Rafael Zambrano also recorded one goal and an assist in the match, while Matthew Loo earned an assist on the first goal of the match. In goal, Tristan Edwards dominated, recording a career-best eight saves and only one goal allowed off a penalty kick.

After the win, the Knights move to 10-2 overall on the season and 3-0 in the Crossroads League. Marian will be back in action as they host Grace in a ranked matchup on Saturday, with kickoff set for 7 PM.
