Marion, Ind. – The Marian women's tennis team competed in the ITA Regional Tournament last week from September 28-30, seeing their best performance yet in the annual tournament.
SINGLES MAIN DRAW
In the singles main draw, the Knights saw quite a bit of success. Emma Chrome went 2-1 as the 13th seed, winning her first two matches 6-1, 6-4 and 6-2, 6-2, before falling in her third match. Betija Dusele was also seeded in the tournament as the 15th seed. Dusele also went 2-1, downing her first two opponents 6-4, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-4, before losing in her next match.
Lisa Koerner had a solid performance, going 2-1 throughout the tournament. Koerner kicked off the tournament with a 6-4, 6-1 win, before a 7-6 (2), 6-2 win in her second match. Her run was ended in her third match after a 6-2, 6-1 loss. Tea Vrkic picked up the 2-6, 6-3, 10-7 win in her match, but would fall in her second match in a touch battle. Josie Yarbrough and Joelle Leihbacher each won their first matches, with Yarbrough winning 7-5, 6-1 and Leihbacher 6-2, 6-0; however, both would have their tournament runs end in their second match.
Katharina Bopst, Dana Savarino, and Mara Schad all dropped their first matches of the tournament sending them to the consolation bracket. In the consolation bracket, Bopst won her first match by default before picking up the 1-6, 7-5, 10-6 win and falling in the following match. Savarino also picked up two victories, winning 6-2, 7-5 and 6-3, 6-3 before her run was ended. Schad won her first match in the consolation bracket 6-1, 2-6, 10-5 before dropping her next match.
SINGLES B DRAW
Sarah Wittenbaum led the way for the Knights in the singles B draw, picking up the championship win by winning all five of her matches. Wittenbaum started her tournament run with four easy wins by only allowing her opponents three or less games, before a tough battle in the championships match that would see her get the 9-8 (2) win.
Audrey Provine and Desiree Ahlberg each took the win in their matches by 8-1 and 8-0 wins, before both fell in their next matches. Averie Shore, Madelyn Oconitrillo, and Alexa Elpers all played in the consolation bracket where Elpers made it to the semifinals. Elpers won her first consolation match 8-4 before defeating fellow teammate, Oconitrillo in her next match 8-5, and then dropping in the semifinals. Oconitrillo saw her tournament run ended by her teammate, Elpers after getting the 8-4 win in her first consolation match. Shore saw her tournament run end with two losses.
DOUBLES MAIN DRAW
In doubles action, Bopst and Koerner led the way by making it to the championship round as the No. 5 seed after going 4-0 throughout the tournament, before falling 6-1, 6-2 to the No. 2 seed IWU in the championship match. The duos of Chrome/Yarbrough and Savarino/Dusele each picked up the win in their matches before dropping their second. Vrkic and Schad were the other Knights in the main draw, but fell in both of their matches.
DOUBLES B DRAW
Elpers and Ahlberg led the charge in the doubles B draw by taking the title over IU Kokomo 8-5. The duo made it to the championship match after taking the bye in their first match, and proceeding to win their next two matches 8-2. Wittenbaum and Leihbacher started off with the bye and winning their next match 8-2, before falling in their following match. Wrapping up the B draw doubles was Provine and Oconitrillo who won their first match 9-8 (2) and fell in their second.
