Marian Splits Saturday Matches, Falls in Afternoon Battle With Indiana Wesleyan

Mount Vernon, Ohio – The Marian women's tennis team continued Crossroads League play, as coach Tyler Scanlan's crew had a doubleheader between the Mt. Vernon Nazarene and No. 5 Indiana Wesleyan. The Knights started their day with the 7-0 sweep of the Cougars, but were unable to keep their undefeated fall going as they lost 6-1 to the Wildcats in the afternoon matchup. Marian is 5-1 in Crossroads League play. 

Marian 7-0 Mt. Vernon Nazarene

In doubles action for the morning, Audrey Provine and Madelyn Oconitrillo kicked off the day for Marian, as they picked up the 6-1 win over Emma Harville and Megan Vollrath at the No. 3 spot, while Sarah Wittenbaum and Alexa Elpers fell to Emily Allison and Audrey Cochran 2-6 at the No. 2 spot, evening things up at 1-1 for the doubles point. The duo of Tea Vrkic and Mara Schad came up big for the Knights at the No. 1 spot, as they were able to win 6-2 over Hailey Clayborn and Hannah Fugate to clinch the doubles point.

In singles action, Yarbrough got things going for Marian, picking up the 6-3, 6-0 victory at the No. 3 spot over Clayborn. Schad was the next Knight to pick up the win at the No. 2 spot over Fugate, 6-2, 6-4. At the No. 4 spot, Wittenbaum finalized the win for Marian after winning 6-3, 6-4 over Allison at the No. 4 spot. Vrkic was the only Knight to go into three sets, but was able to pull out the 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5) win over Clayborn. Finishing up singles play for Marian were Averie Shore winning 6-2, 6-0 over Vollrath at the No. 6 spot, while Elpers won at the No. 5 spot 6-2, 6-4 over Harville.

Indiana Wesleyan 6-1 Marian

The Knights did not fair well in doubles set against the No. 5 Wildcats as they began their second match of the day, dropping the point. Josie Yarbrough and Emma Chrome fell 6-2 in the No. 3 doubles set, while at No. 1 doubles Katharina Bopst and Lisa Koerner were defeated 6-1. Betija Dusele and Dana Savarino went unfinished as the duo played No. 2 doubles.

In singles, Bopst fell to the Wildcats' Sofia Munoz 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 2 match, but the team rebounded with their first point from Koerner at No. 4 singles as she won 6-4, 6-2. Trailing 2-1, Marian was unable to get another win in the match, as Chrome lost at No. 3 with the newcomer going down 6-3, 6-1 to Mel Dveksler. France Atenzana clinched the match for Indiana Wesleyan, as she defeated Dusele 5-7, 6-0, 1-0 (10-7) for the clinching point. Ellie Snider would go on to defeat Savarino 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5 singles, and at No. 6 singles Emily Connolly defeated Joelle Leihbacher 6-1, 6-1. 

Marian will be back in action as they host their only home match of the fall season September 13, as they take on Goshen College at 9:30 AM and Grace at 4 PM.
