INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian women's tennis team won big on Thursday afternoon on the Marian Tennis Courts, as the Knights took down Bethel 4-0 in the Crossroads League Tournament Semifinals to advance to the title match on Saturday. Marian improved to 9-1 overall this season following the tournament win, advancing to the championship round for the fifth consecutive season.
After some hard-fought doubles play, the Knights clinched the doubles point. Josie Yarbrough and Emma Chrome got things rolling for Marian as they picked up the first win at the No. 3 spot, defeating Alexia Pena and Layla Jojo 6-2. At the No. 1 spot, Katharina Bopst and Lisa Koerner fell to Bethel's Elizaveta Mikhailova and Kyla Heckaman 6-4, before Betija Dusele and Dana Savarino came up big for the Knights at the No. 2 spot, winning 6-4 over Saige Rinkenberger and Fatima Calderone to give Marian the 1-0 lead going into singles play.
The Knights went into singles play needing three wins to clinch the match, and got a quick win at the No. 4 spot as Koerner defeated Rinkenberger in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. Savarino got the Knights' the third point of the match after taking down Calderone 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 5 spot. Chrome finished things off for Marian by downing Heckaman 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 3 spot. Joelle Leihbacher and Bopst's singles matches went unfinished, but both were leading in their respective matches. Dusele's match also went unfinished as she dropped the first set 7-5 and was even 1-1 in the second.
Marian will play in the Crossroads League Championship match on Saturday afternoon at Indiana Wesleyan, with the match time to be announced.
