Fort Wayne, Ind. – The Marian women's tennis team got things rolling in their first matches of the season, sweeping St. Francis (Ind.) and Spring Arbor in a tri-match hosted by St. Francis. The two wins start the Knights off 2-0 this fall in Crossroads League Play.
Marian 7-0 St. Francis
Marian rolled through doubles, earning quick wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Dana Savarino and Betija Dusele shutout Alyssa Ciocca and Jennessa Johnson at No. 2 with a 6-0 win, while Emma Chrome and Josie Yarbrough picked up the win in the No. 3 spot with a shutout of Lizzie Gomez and Danielle Smith. At No. 1 doubles, Katharina Bopst and Lisa Lisa Koerner's match went unfinished, trailing 3-2.
In singles, Koerner took down Henline at No. 1 in 6-0, 6-4, while Tea Vrkic defeated Ciocca 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2. Audrey Provine shutout Smith at No. 6, while Alexa Elpers made quick work of Gomez with a swift 6-0, 6-1 win. At No. 3, Mara Schad defeated Sophia Vandegriff 6-2, 6- 6-2 before Yarbrough finished things up for the Knights, winning 6-1, 6-1 over Johnson.
Marian 7-0 Spring Arbor
The Knights came back after their break to take on Spring Arbor, continuing to succeed as they made the sweep once again. Marian made easy work in the doubles, picking up wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. Bopst and Koerner got the 6-1 win over Olivia Creech and Kenzi Sells at No. 1, while Savarino and Dusele picked up the 6-3 win over Rebekah Pake and Abby Ducharme at No. 2. The team of Yarbrough and Chrome went unfished at the No. 3 spot, leading 4-3.
Chrome had a solid 6-0, 6-0 finish at the No. 3 spot, defeating Sells. At the No. 1 spot, Dusele took down Ducharme in easy fashion at 6-0, 6-2, while Bopst had no troubles with Pake at the No. 2 spot, winning 6-2, 6-4. Koerner continued the Knights tear, as she went on to defeat Crech 6-2 at No. 4, 6-4 and Savarino won 6-3, 6-4 against Paige Trela at the No. 5 spot. Finishing off the day for Marian was Joelle Leihbacher at the No. 6, as she won in three sets, going 3-6, 6-2 and winning 10-7 in the tie-breaker.
Marian will be back in action September 7 as they travel to Bethel for a tri-match. The team will play Bethel at 9:30 AM and follow with Huntington at 1 PM.
