Hilton Head, S.C. - The Marian women's tennis team continued their undefeated spring break trip on Wednesday morning, as the Knights defeated Drew University by a 4-3 score. Marian's win gives them a 3-0 mark on the week, improving to 14-4 overall on the year.
The Knights took the doubles point, getting wins at No. 1 and at No. 3.
Mara Schad and
Madelyn Oconitrillo took a 6-2 at the No. 3 position to start the match, with
Tea Vrkic and
Sarah Wittenbaum finding a win at No. 1 doubles to win the point. Vrkic and Wittenbaum won by a score of 7-5, helping Marian take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Knights would come up just short at No. 2 doubles, as the pair of
Alexa Elpers and
Desiree Ahlberg fell in a 7-5 contest.
Marian's lead going into singles went by the wayside, as the Knights fell at No. 1 singles with Vrkic losing in straight sets to Sofiya Lebedeva 6-0, 6-2. Wittenbaum was able to get Marian back in the lead after her match at No. 3 singles, as she scored a 6-2, 6-0 win over Mary Kalorin. The match would come back to a level 2-2 tie as Schad was unable to win at No. 2, falling to Melina Christodoulou 6-1, 7-5.
With the match tied, the Knights got in a roll in the final three positions of the lineup, claiming wins in two of the three matches to clinch the match. Ahlberg was victorious in straight sets at No. 5, winning 6-1, 6-0 to put her team in front 3-2. At No. 4, Elpers earned a lengthy two-set win, claiming a 7-6 (5) set one win and a 6-3 set two win over Danielle DelRosso to clinch the match. Oconitrillo came up just short in her match at No. 6 singles, losing in a three-set tiebreaker to Natalia Zamora.
The Knights will finish their spring break schedule Wednesday evening, as they close the day with a bout at SCAD-Savannah.
