Box Score Mobile, Ala. - The Marian women's tennis team advances to the NAIA National Tournament Second Round for the first time in program history. The Knights took the 4-0 win from No. 22 Concordia on Tuesday morning, Marian is now 15-8 overall on the season.
The Knights secured the doubles point with
Liliane Alinquant and
Paloma Caceres Villalba's easy 6-0 win over the Bulldogs. After a pretty back and fourth beginning
Yasmin Imamniyazova and
Ana Barbosa Fernandez pushed ahead at No. 1 doubles and took the 6-2 win.
Michelle Irigoyen and
Ana Lopez Torres went unfinished at No. 2 doubles but held the 5-2 lead over Concordia.Â
Caceres Villalba extended Marian's lead with her 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles. Irigoyen was the next to finish extending the lead with a 6-0, 6-1 win over her Bulldog competitor at No. 3 singles. Lopez Torres secured the win with a defeat at No. 2 singles (6-2, 6-1). Imamniyazova went unfinished at No. 1 but held the 6-1, 4-2 lead while Barbosa Fernandez went unfinished at No. 4 holding the 6-1, 3-2 lead over Concordia. Alinquant also went unfinished but held on to the 6-2, 5-2 lead at No. 5 singles.
The Knights will advance onto the second round tomorrow with their win. They will take on No. 6 Loyola at 9 am CT.Â
