Rios Leads Knights With Team's First NAIA All-American Honor of the Week

Marion, Ind. - The Marian men's track and field team started out the NAIA Outdoor National Championships meet in fifth place after one day of competition.

The Knights hold onto a fifth place tie with Carroll (Mont.) and Indiana Wesleyan each recording eight points. Madonna, Cumberlands, and College of Idaho holds onto second place with 10 points currently and British Columbia holds on to first with 20 points.

Christian Rios opened up the day with a second place effort in the hammer to earn the first All-American Honor of the week. Rios threw a 64.41m for a new personal best and the second best all-time mark for the Knights to claim his eighth career All-American honor.

Will Osafo, Jeremiah Brown, and Ricardo Mateo, and Jonathon Phillips opened up the day on the track finishing sixth in the 4x100m relay. The Knights recorded a new school record of 40.26 to qualify for the finals on Friday. Owen Pittman, Charles Leedke, and Tristan Trevino all competed in the 1500m prelims. Pittman finished 16th with a time of 4:05.62. Leedke and Trevino each qualified for finals on Friday with Leedke finishing in seventh with a time of 3:58.93 and Trevino finishing in first with a time of 3:57.22.

Richard Dube competed in the 400m hurdles finishing in 23rd with a time of 55.14. Olivier Lifrange and Jeremiah Brown continued the action in the 200m prelims with Lifrange finishing in 22nd with a time of 21.54 and Brown finishing in 25th with a time of 21.66.

Leedke, Andrew McDade, Pittman, and Mason Piatt closed out the day competing in the 4x800m prelims. The Knights finished in third with a time of 7:38.78 to qualify for tomorrows race.

The Knights will be back in action tomorrow with Armani Glass opening action in the field in the long jump and Ben Riehle, Rick Williams, and Tristan Trevino opening action on the track in the 800m.

Felipe Mentz competed throughout the morning in the decathlon currently holding onto 14th place with 3150 points. Mentz had a day high of eighth place in the shot put with a mark of 11.50m.
