Mobile, Ala. - The Marian women's tennis team's season comes to an end in the second round of the NAIA National Tournament, falling to the seventh-seeded LSU-Alexandria on Wednesday afternoon. The Knights end their season with an overall record of 17-7 and a perfect 9-0 Crossroads League season.
The Generals opened up the match with a quick 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles over
Yasmin Imamniyazova and
Ana Lopez Torres.
Liliane Alinquant and
Ana Barbosa Fernandez fought back with a 6-1 win at court No. 3. With the clinching doubles match, Michelle Iriogyen and
Jimena Rivera Flores took the 6-1 win at No. 2 to take the doubles point.
With the Knights in the lead 1-0 going into singles, the Generals fired off a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 1 over Imamniyazova to tie the match up one a piece. LSU-Alexandria was able to take the one-point lead over Marian with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Alinquant at No. 5. Barbosa Fernandez was able to quickly counter with a 6-3. 6-2 win at No. 4, followed up by Lopez Torres' 6-4, 7-6(3) win at No. 2, taking the 3-2 lead. The Generals continued to push back at the Knights with a 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 win over Iriogyen, followed by a 6-1, 2-6. 6-4 win over
Paloma Caceres Villalba to take the 4-3 win.
The Knights ended their season for the second year in a row, reaching the second round of the National Tournament for the second year in a row. Marian also had an undefeated Crossroads League season and won both the regular season and tournament championship.
