INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian men's tennis team rebounded into the win column Tuesday afternoon, starting out the Crossroads League Tournament with a strong 6-1 victory over Spring Arbor. The Knights stand at 6-3 overall this fall, as they advance to the semifinal round.
Marian took the first point of the match, jumping on top of the Cougars in the match by taking the doubles point. Shadi Al Tori and Ashwin Bhat made quick work of their match at No. 3 doubles, winning by a score of 6-1 over Charlie Dobben and Caleb Kaytar. The point was clinched moments later, as Mark Griffin and Andrew Ilett were victorious at No. 1 over Connor Mogle and Sebastian Smith, as the duo won 6-2. The Knights pair of Armando Lopez and Jacob Wittenbaum went unfinished in their match at No. 2 doubles, as they trailed 3-5.
In singles, Ilett paced Marian as he claimed the first win with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at the No. 3 position. At No. 4, Dmitrii Voshchenkov picked up a commanding 6-3, 6-2 win, while Bhat scored the winning point in the match with his 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles. Spring Arbor would pick up a win at No. 2 singles, as Jona Henze went down to Mogle by a 6-3, 6-2 count, but the Knights finished strong winning at both No. 1 and No. 5.
At the first position, Griffin claimed a three-set victory by taking down Smith in three sets, as he rebounded from a 6-1 loss in the first set by winning the second and third 6-0, 6-0. Jones McNamar finished the match with a win, claiming a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles.
The Knights will advance to the Crossroads League Tournament Semifinals on Thursday, traveling to Huntington to play against the No. 2 seed Foresters. The time for Thursday's match will be announced to the schedule later tonight.
