Huntington, Ind. - The Marian men's tennis team put up a fight, but came up short Thursday night as they fell 4-2 against Huntington in the Crossroads League Tournament Semifinals. Marian's record ends with a 6-4 mark for the fall season.
The Knights and Foresters battled through doubles, needing all three matches to go final to claim the first point of the match. No. 2 doubles was the first court to finish play, as Huntington rolled to a quick 6-1 win, with their duo taking down Armando Lopez and Jacob Wittenbaum. Marian would rebound with a win at No. 3 doubles, as Shadi Al Tori and Ashwin Bhat claimed a 7-5 win against Bautista Rodriguez and Angel Vazquez. Coming down to the finish at No. 1 doubles, the Knights' duo of Mark Griffin and Andrew Ilett were unable to claim a win, falling to Agustin Agosto and Valentin Mussi by a 7-6 (2) score.
Trailing 1-0 in the match, Marian worked quick to tie up the score as Bhat took a quick 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles. Huntington took the next point in the match as they earned the win at No. 5 singles, with Illia Turaba defeating Jones McNamar 6-3, 6-3. Marian again tied the match with Griffin grinding out a 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 1 singles over Agosto, evening the score at 2-2.
Marian was unable to ride the momentum on the remaining three courts following Griffin's win, as they were topped at No. 2 and No. 4 singles, as Huntington took the win. At No. 2 singles Ilett lost a three-set match by scores of 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, while at No. 4 singles Mussi defeated Dmitrii Voshchenkov 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (2) to clinch the match. Jona Henze went unfinished in his match at No. 3 singles, as we trailed in the third set 5-1.
Marian's loss ends their slate of matches for the fall season, was the Knights will wrap up their fall schedule next week competing in the ITA Regional Tournament in Marion, Indiana.
