JASPER, Ind. – The Marian men's tennis team defeated the No. 20 Oakland City Saturday afternoon with a 4-3 victory. The win moves the Knights to 12-7 overall on the season.
Oakland City picked up the doubles point to take the early lead as Andrew Ilett and Jona Henze fell 6-4 at the No. 3 spot to Juanes Pinto and Nelson Ramos, followed by Mark Griffin and Shadi Al Tori dropping 6-4 to Francesco Esnoala and Andres Perez at No. 1 doubles. At the No. 2 spot, Ashwin Bhat and Jones McNamar were tied 6-6 with Willem Cilliers and Louki Nivarlet.
Marian made up ground in singles as Griffin got the first win with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Esnoala at the No. 1 spot. The Mighty Oaks took the lead again after Ilett fell 7-5, 6-3 to Ramos at No. 3 singles, and Bhat lost 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 at the No. 4 spot to Andre Baltazar. Dmitrii Voshchenkov picked up another win for the Knights as he defeated Perez 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 at No. 2 singles. Jona Henze tied the score with his 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 victory against Angel Gomez at No. 5 singles, while McNamar sealed the win by defeating Tomas Ojeda 7-6 (7-6), 7-6 (7-3) at the No. 6 spot.
The Knights will be back in action on Tuesday at Franklin College. The match against the Grizzlies is set for 5 p.m.
