Hilton Head, S.C. - The Marian men's tennis team suffered their first loss on their spring break trip Wednesday morning, as the Knights dropped a 4-3 match against NCAA DIII foe Drew University. Marian's loss is their second of the spring, falling to 10-6 overall on the season.
Marian came up strong in doubles, winning at both No. 2 and No. 3 to take the first point of the match.
Armando Lopez and
Austin Kuklak won their matchup at No. 2 doubles by a 6-4 score, and
Isaac Lian and
Jared Thomas won 6-3 score at No. 3 to score the point. Marian came up just short of a doubles sweep, as
Gavin Dardeen and
Jacob Wittenbaum lost 7-6 (7-3) at No. 1 doubles.
In singles, the Rangers scored an early win as Dardeen retired in his match to Daryl Wong, trailing 3-1 before injury ended his round.
Shadi Al Tori rebounded for the Knights earning a quick 6-2, 6-1 win over Shivi Perera at No. 3 singles, and at No. 4 singles
Jake Giles scored a 6-3, 6-0 win to put Marian in front 3-1. As the match progressed, the Rangers got stronger, with Avi Perera claiming a 6-3, 6-3 win over
Max Sternberg to inch within a point of Marian.
The match would come down to the results at both No. 5 and No. 6, with Marian coming up just shot in consecutive three-set matches. Bret Schuler scored the winning point of the match as he defeated
Austin Kuklak at No. 5 3-6, 6-2, 10-5. Just before the match ended at No. 5, Lian fell in the No. 6 singles match, losing to Santo Carroccia 6-3, 4-6, 10-5.
Marian will finish play on their spring break schedule Wednesday night when they take on SCAD-Savannah.
