Box Score WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Marian's men's tennis team battled tough at Grace on Saturday afternoon, but the No. 17 Grace Lancers were able to outlast the upset with a 4-3 final score.
Jones McNamar and
James Ashworth got the match started off with a 6-3 performance to win at No. 3 doubles to put pressure on the home team. Marian, however, was unable to get the decisive point, with
Ashwin Bhat and
Shadi Al Tori falling 6-2 at the No.2 spot to Pablo Gregori and Salva Pons and
Andrew Ilett and
Marc Soriano dropping a close 7-6 one to Facundo Paredes and Javier Gallego at No.1 doubles.Â
Grace was the first to strike in singles action, as Paredes defeated
Luis Sobanski 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot. The Lancers continued to build on their lead with another win at No. 1 singles, as Ashworth fell 6-4, 6-0 to Gallego. Ilett turned things around for the Knights, picking up the 6-1, 6-2 win against Pons at the No. 4 spot, while Soriano won 6-1, 6-3 over Francisco Margaria at the No. 6 spot. Grace was able to finish the job after winning at the No. 3 spot, with
Jan Bartolome dropping 6-4, 6-2 to Gregori.
Jona Henze grabbed another win for the Knights with his victory at No. 5 singles, 7-6 (8-6), 4-1 (ret.).Â
Marian will be back at home for their next match, hosting Spring Arbor on September 19 at 2:30 p.m.Â
