Box Score Mount Vernon, Ohio - The Marian women's soccer team found all the offense they needed in a two minute window in the second half, as two second half goals guided the Knights to a 2-0 win over Mount Vernon Nazarene Wednesday night. The win gives Marian a 3-1-1 record in Crossroads League play, while their overall mark moves to 11-2-1 this season.
The first half was relatively quiet for both teams on offense, as the two opponents managed a combined nine shot attempts in the period. Mount Vernon came away with the first look of the game in the second minute, but the kick was knocked away by the Knights' defense. The Cougars would get one more shot off before Marian's offense began to find it's form, seeing Allie Schlom take the team's first look in the 20th minute, but her boot clanged off the crossbar.
Marian went nearly 14 minutes in between shots as their offense built steam on the attack, with Jacelyn Smith missing her first shot of the game wide coming just a minute after a save by Noelle Rolfsen. The Knights would get four addtional attempts off before the end of the half, seeing just one shot on frame from Ryli John in the 39th minute. Marian led at the half in shot attempts 6-3.
In the second half Marian stayed as aggressive as they were in the final minutes of the first, getting a pair of early shots on goal from Madison Hill. The pursuit for a goal paid off in the 60th minute, as Jacelyn Smith was able to recover a loose ball in front of the net, and bury an empty net goal to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. Just 95 seconds later John came back in for the Knights, and found the ball after a Delaney Taylor throw-in bounced through the defense. John dribbled toward the center of the field, and fired a strong shot at the left post, seeing the ball clang back into the goal to give Marian a 2-0 lead.
The pair of goals was all Marian needed, as they allowed zero shot attempts over the final 29 minutes of the match to close the 2-0 victory. As a team the Knights took 13 shots, and were led by Smith's three shots the helped result in the game-winning goal. John took three shots off the bench and led the team in looks on frame, scoring her insurance goal unassisted. Schlom and Erin Oleksak each took two shot attempts.
In goal Noelle Rolfsen faced just two shots on goal, making two saves to preserve her fourth road shutout of the season. Rolfsen's shutout was her fifth total this season.
Marian will return home on Saturday for their first match at St. Vincent Field since September 29, hosting Huntington at 11 AM for a senior day match.
